I was asked yesterday - are there any urns on gravestones in Glasgow before 1800? I can't think of any offhand, but thought I would ask the hive mind (i.e. youse).
Any smart ideas?
Thanks.
By the way, moderators, how about a section for Glasgow questions?
(And while I'm asking, why are the archived events so high up the list, even before the current events?)
End of quiz. _________________ Take a walk on the Clyde side ... |

*BUMP*
Stylistically speaking probably not as urns are a victorian phenomenon brought about by the ability to machine cut stone must greve stones circa 1700's were (pictures from Dunfermline)
small - if you were poor
through
to - if you were slightly less poor
and from - if you were slightly rich
to - if your realy rich (picture from Fearn graveyard above inverness)
or in the church - if you were really important
So to summerise before mechanised cutting stone status was based upon size and design (some people had a large flat stone with no text as they had 'spent' all of the budget on the stone) but post mechanisation and the cheapening of pattern cuting status becomes more of a size thing.
hope this helps

Intersting aside on the theme of mechanical stone cutting
The designs pre the shift were complex and varied but the materials were mostly local stone and simple to carve. Post shift the designs became simpler/standardised, but the materials became more varied
