CAMPAIGNERS opposed to a nightclub under Glasgow's Botanic
Gardens have vowed to take their fight to the top court.

Leisure entrepreneur Stefan King's proposal for a multi-million pound
development on the edge of the popular West End park has already been
backed by councillors.

But a group was set up to fight the scheme at a public meeting last night
and city lawyer David Howat said it would take the case all the way to the
Court of Session.

Almost 300 people turned up for a joint meeting of Hillhead and Kelvinside
community councils at Glasgow University to hear city parks boss Robert
Booth reveal details of the £7m plan.

AN underground nightclub planned for Glasgow's Botanic Gardens could be
facing a new hurdle, it emerged today.

Stefan King's G1 Group has already been granted a 99-year lease for the
£7million project but it's understood council chiefs now want to cut the
lease to 25 years.

And the council's call may turn out to be a deal breaker for the club tycoon
who is to be offered the chance to walk away.

Negotiations are now due to take place between the firm and the council in
a bid to reach agreement on King's controversial nightclub, restaurant and
cafe/bar masterplan.

The council's executive member for development and regeneration
services, George Ryan is to hold detailed discussions.

A CAMPAIGN group is asking students to boycott venues owned by a pub and
club entrepreneur in protest at his controversial nightclub plans for a city park.

The Save Our Botanics group has asked the student associations of
Glasgow University, Strathclyde University and Glasgow Caledonian
University to stay away from venues owned by Stefan King's G1 Group.

If students back the move the boycott could affect The Loft, Arta,
Corinthian, Cul De Sac, the Polo Lounge and Viper, as well as the
Grosvenor Cinema on Ashton Lane.

Mr King has angered residents with his proposal to develop within the
gardens, by building a cafe/bar, an underground nightclub and conference
centre, a mini-railway, bandstand and pavilion, on the site of a disused
Victorian railway station.

Plans for a bar and nightclub within Glasgow's Botanic Gardens could be halted
because of trusts established by Robert The Bruce and wrangles over land
ownership.

Glasgow City Council now believes parts of the plot designated for the controversial
scheme fall within "common good land", while other subterranean sections may not be the
authority's to give away.

Senior council figures say that even if the developer does not pull out, resolution
of the issues could delay it by at least two years.

A threat of legal action by campaigners against the project could hold that timescale
up even further.

The council has also confirmed in writing to leisure chain G1 Group, the firm behind
the proposals, that a 99-year lease is no longer an option and that profit-sharing
must be on the table.

It follows a campaign of some internal Labour pressure from MPs and MSPs on
the ruling council administration to ditch the project.

There is also a feature about turning the station into an eco centre in The Herald

It already is an Eco Centre with a carbon footprint of zero unless you count seasonal decaying vegetation and has been since it was abandoned although making use of it in anyway other than a nightclub has to be considered if there's a demand.

As some of the comments below that article point out regarding it's use had SPT and GCC acted on their original plans to reinstate it around 15 - 20 years ago (Christ! they spent enough taxpayers money on the feasibility study) as an alternative lightrail system and one that would have complimented if not bettered that outdated wee diddy underground system we currently have and plan to expand at unknown cost in time for the 2014 games.
The infrastructure is by and large still there at least the most expensive parts of it are still in situ underground and still an asset today but as usual we missed the boat and burnt our bridges far too soon.
Had we done so the issue of nightclubs and eco centres would neither be here nor there.

TWO species of bat could scupper millionaire Stefan King's plans for a bar and
club in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens.

The body charged with the care of Scotland's landscape and heritage has
contacted council bosses insisting they conduct a bat survey at the listed
park before any planning application is prepared for the West End site.

Save Our Botanics campaigners claim there are two species of bat roosting
in the Kelvindale tunnel, the common pipistrelle and Daubenton. Pipistrelles
are among the smallest British bats with a wingspan of 20cm. They weigh the
same as a 5p piece and eat up to 2000 midges a night.

Wildlife experts who organise visits to the Botanics claim it is "very possible"
roosts are in the disused tunnels.

And if routine environmental checks identify a colony of any variety it
could present another headache for the G1 Group's proposals for a bar
and nightclub within the gardens.

Last week senior figures within the city council claimed the tunnels claimed
do not belong to the council to give away and some of the site falls under
Common Good land, protecting it from development.
