I don't rate the Kodak at all - I've got a Z100 kicking about - the camera I had before getting my DSLR, and it really struggles with a lot of situations particularly when using the flash and the shutter lag is ridiculous.

The only compacts I would really rate are those made by companies that also have a hand in the more serious market. Panasonic make some nice P&S models (with their Leica backup) as do Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji.

The Kodak is quite bulky and chunky and the camera in your phone would probably give better results than the Vivitar. The long end of the zoom on the Kodak would be virtually unusable without a tripod in most conditions.

Why not have a look at the Panasonic DMC-LZ7, my Dad got one of these and its quite good and also has image stabilisation built in.

I'd go for the Pano I have the 5meg pixel one.
I use that more than my minolta now.
