Junction is city’s worst accident blackspot again

THIS city centre crossroads has once again been named Glasgow's most
dangerous stretch of road.

The blackspot - at the junction of Argyle Street, Union Street and Jamaica
Street - has the worst safety record in the city, with 28 accidents in which
people were injured over the past three years.

The number of accidents has risen - despite the council taking action to
improve road markings at the busy site.

In the previous three-year period, 24 incidents were recorded at the location.

The junction at Stockwell Street and the Trongate was named the second
most dangerous stretch of road, with 15 accidents, by the city council's
accident investigation and prevention team.

However, this was among a number of sites which recorded a fall in
accidents over the past six years.

The total number of accidents at Glasgow's worst accident blackspots has
dropped by almost a third overall - from 713 to 496.

Council chiefs insisted the city's roads are the safest they've ever been.

Four out of five of the most dangerous sites identified by the council were
in the city centre, including the junction at Gordon Street, Union Street and
Renfield Street, with 14 accidents.

Outside the city centre, the worst blackspot was Paisley Road West at
Berryknowes Road, with 14 accidents.

I have noticed recently that bus drivers almost always run red lights. It used to be the exception and now it is the rule.  I have witnessed several near misses recently due to buses jumping red lights.

Aye, it's a natural cull - who cares if some junkies or jaikies end up under a bus?...

The first person to be killed on Debenhams corner before they blocked it off was no junkie or jaikie... he was a 15 year old boy... I knew him well

It doesn't help that the buses & taxis coming up Jamaica St go at the same time as the traffic coming down Union St.

I've seen some very near misses there due to that.

You're better letting the bus lane from Jamaica street go first.... they only get a couple of seconds of green light
