IM finding it difficult to find out anything at all online about this disaster that happened when the concrete weight on a crane being used to build the dossers home in Broad st Bridgeton collapsed killing I think three men. maybe more. I lived in Fordneuk st at the time overlooking the work in progress and was doing a washing over at the window.. next thing the house literally shook to its foundations with the crash.. I couldnt see what had happened for the stables and corrugated wall facing the window so had to run up to the second landing to see.. bodies by then were being covered with tarpaulines.. Im not sure how many men died that day. but it seems to have been totally forgotten... there isnt even a plaque to say these men ever existed near the site and I think there should be... This happened in 69 or early 70.

The working men's hostel was being constructed in Broad Street. A tower crane was being erected and during this operation, 2 fitters were up on the back jib winching out concrete ballast. The front main jib was pinned but not fully attached.

The Fitters had to winch out the ballast a certain distance to allow the front jib to be fully attached.

Some joiners were were working below on the main building foundations.

It appeared that the fitters were sitting with their back to the moving back ballast. It appeared that this ballast was winched out beyond its position to allow the main jib to be attached. As the back ballast went further out, the back jib buckled under the extra bending moment. The back balance , on wheels, started to run out, the bending moment caused the main top A frame to buckle. A Run away ensued. The concrete ballast ran off the back jib, the back jib struck the tower Nast, the ballast fell to the ground onto the joiners.

The two fitters and I think 3 joiners were killed instantly.

Date was about 1972.

Says memories, as I was there within a short time of the accident.

I lived in Broad Street when I was wee but not for long.  Like most Glasgow families, we were moved out when they demolished the tenements.
