Any tips for buying a digital video camera ? I'll probably go for a 2nd hand or refurbished one. Is there anything to avoid ?

A broken one, expensive paperweight otherwise

But seriously, http://svp.co.uk/products-list.php?cid=172 has some low-end ones.

If you're looking at the used/refurb market don't go for out of date technologies such as VHS-C or Video 8 as you'll find it hard to get tapes and will find it awkward to digitise and suffer from poor quality. DV and mini DV are the ones to look for although new low end models would give comparable or better results to older mid-range models without much difference in price.

You'll also need some decent video software as the bundled efforts are usually seriously lacking - Adobe Premiere Elements gets good reports.

Oh yeah it will be an (almost) up to date digital jobbie, perhaps no more than a year old, or i'll stump up for a new one.

I had a VHS-C camera about 12 years back, carried it around in an army surplus gasmask bag

I've bought one new, miniDV format

There was no software with it (cheapskates) what's the best free programme I can use to download from the camera, and do some basic editing.
Not interested in fancy stuff or effects, just the basics no bollocks

Cheers.

Windows Movie Maker is not bad for free.

You can get a demo of Adobe Premiere Elements from their site.
