‘Get planning permission for gates to stop the neds’

GLASGOW residents have been ordered to get planning permission - for gates
on their back lanes they put up to keep neds out.

The 7ft gates were erected in Cardonald to stop teenage vandals who were
terrorising the neighbourhood.

Residents say they have enjoyed "peace and tranquillity" since they went up - but
now Glasgow City Council has written saying the gates were put up without planning
permission.

A letter from the planning department to residents' spokeswoman Pat Bermingham
said: "A planning application requires to be made."

It added that if permission was granted, a stopping-up order would also be
needed to close it off the back lane.

The move comes after the Evening Times last month highlighted the residents'
campaign to stop yobs making their lives a misery.

Mrs Bermingham, of Hillington Park Circus, said: "If the council attempts to
make us take the gates down there will be an absolute riot.

"That lane is private, it is owned by the residents. When we found that out I
asked the council if it would take it over and maintain it. The answer I got was
politely get lost."

Mrs Bermingham said youths were using the lane for underage drinking, graffiti,
drug taking and sex. She said they were running through gardens to escape
the police.

She added: "Since we put up the gates it has been so quiet - it is like chalk and
cheese. There would be an uproar if we had to take them down."

Around 60 residents on Invergyle Drive, Wedderlea Drive and Hillington Park
Circus have houses which back on to the lane.

All have keys for the gates as do the refuse collectors. There are also agreements
in place to allow any workmen into the lane if needed.

My parents live in Hartlepool and the local council came round 2 years ago and stuck up a huge set of these gates on the lane between the houses.
At first it was a minor problem as the usual council mistakes were made no one knew who was dealing with the residents for keys and such like and no warning of the impending works were made.
This lane was also private and had the same problems mentioned in the article drinking, Graffitti, fires, sex the council still dont maintain it but were told to do something about it from the police and fire brigade.
Since these gates went up housebreaking and anti social behaviour in the area has taken a rather dramatic dip to the effect that the house prices have seen a 45% increase in the last 2yrs alone...

Good luck to them i say.

We’ve won fight to keep anti-vandal gates in lane

A GROUP of Glasgow residents have been told they can keep a set of gates they
put up to keep out vandals.

There were fears the gates, put up in Cardonald, would have to come down
because of planning rules.

But Glasgow City Council has assured the residents the gates, which have brought
them "peace and tranquillity", can stay after the Evening Times highlighted the issue.

The move has been welcomed as a "victory for common sense".

Residents built the gates three years ago to block off a back lane which runs
past 60 properties on Invergyle Drive, Wedderlea Drive and Hillington Park Circus.

The 7ft-high gates were put up to keep out gangs of teenage vandals, who were
using the lane for underage drinking, graffiti, drug taking and sex.

But concern was raised last month when the council received a complaint the
residents had no planning permission to build the gates.

The council wrote to residents telling them they must seek planning permission.
It added that, if permission was granted, a stopping-up order would also need to
be granted to close off the lane.
