Springburn Public Halls were built between 1899 and 1902 and funded by the Reid family of Nelson, Reid & Co. This was an arrangement with the Corporation as long as they funded the nearby Winter Gardens in Springburn Park. The building is a red sandstone ashler construction in an Italian Renaissance style designed by William B. Whitie.
The building was originally opposed by the city fathers as it was campaigned for by the residents of Springburn for a place to hold larger public gatherings. It was during the foundation stone laying ceremony that Baillie Samuel Chisholm referred to the people of Springburn as the 'petted and spoiled child of the corporation'.
Opening on the 16th of May 1902, it survived as until the 1960s despite its expensive hire costs. It was converted to a sports centre and then finally closed in the mid 80s and has been derelict since.

Funny how one of those Cherubs is a little coy there whilst the other one is drying his nutsack in the breeze..

Great piece of information which will hopefully set the scene for a evolving thread as this building is hopefully restored as part of the recent planning permission which was granted in 17th November 2009.
Hi Lenzie and to Urban Glasgow
Here is the report which was considered at the Planning Committee when the application was granted permission.
I'd like to find a photograph of when the artists covered the outside with candles _________________ Now coming at you with 95% more significance, 1% less salt and virtually fat free!
Sure it will be located within the Mitchell. Particularly if it was a commissioned piece of art. Do you know when this took place? _________________ I had a dream today
I cant remember exactly when it was. The first I knew about it was when I saw a picture of it and that may have been an old picture for all I know. It wasnt the best quality shot either.
The virtual mitchell has a couple of shots of the halls but they arent for the taking or hotlinking _________________ Now coming at you with 95% more significance, 1% less salt and virtually fat free!
