An order was made with little warning for the destruction of the Palace Theatre in 1977. Staff of the Citizens arranged a stay of execution to rescue the best of the Victorian fittings, including the statues.
The six pillars on which they sat were once the front of the Union Bank on Ingram Street. The statues were brought down from the building after nearly a hundred years on 12 July 1977 in order to protect them from demolition work taking place at the nearby Gorbals Cross.
The picture above shows a crane at work removing the building, at the time The Glasgow Herald reported that the statues were removed for preservation and weighed around three tons each. They now sit above the main entrance in the new foyer of the theatre.

In 1977 the Lord Provost Mr Peter McCann called for the sacking of theatre bosses after a performance of Dracula (shown in picture) which featured nude scenes which he described as "kinky claptrap appealing only to mentally ill weirdos" (Sunday Express, 13 March 1977). The Provost's calls were not supported by his councillors and his attempts to gain city council control of programming at the Citizens failed. The entire run of Dracula at the Citizens was a sell-out.
Cleland Street at Gorbals Street (Linen Bank Building) - July 1979
The picture shows the old Linen Bank building was once used as a Constituency office for the old Labour Party. Glasgow Queen's Park was a short-lived burgh constituency represented in the House of Commons from 1974 until 1983 by Frank McElhone who was previously an MP in the old Glasgow Gorbals seat.
Following the death of her husband in 1982, Helen McElhone was elected as his successor in the resulting by-election as Member of Parliament for Glasgow Queen's Park. However, she served only for six months as the seat was abolished by boundary changes before the 1983 general election.

To be honest - I wish I had been alive (even if it were just for a day or two) to have gone round the city in the early 70's complete with SLR and a bag of Ilford and Colour film - (probably Kodak) and snapped up parts of Glasgow that should never have got the bullet
This is the thing that bewilders me Alex...... What on earth were Glasgow people doing back then? Were they all doing a Rip Van Winkle so the retarded Corporation could come in and wipe half the city?
This place today is largely a pile of nonsense, I'm blaming Streapadair for posting those pictures, otherwise I would never have come to that conclusion
Only jokin, Super Streap should be highly commended for his work, which he felt at one time was probably as pointless as the destruction he was recording.
Hopefully others will come along in time and provide or enrich the forum with yet more material.
Think its fair to say that by the mid-60's, most of Glasgow's slum conditions had been removed, what happened after that was acts of complete insanity, maybe a reflection on why half of Glasgow is currently insane some 40 years down the line.

Hi flesh I am in the process of finishing off photographing all the tenement buildings in Glasgow.
I only have Shettleston, part of Park Circus, Anniesland and Ballieieston to do.
I have thousands of photos waiting to go onto the web once I finish taking the rest, should keep me busy
While some of the photos may not be technically correct, they are a record of what was here when I started, perhaps some day I will be famous but I will be dead
I to wish I had started in the 70s or earlier but to do what I have done in 35 m, way too expensive
Its great that we are getting guys like you and strepadair, who wandered around snapping and now are showing us their stuff
