Masterplan to transform the East End (Evening Times)

A masterplan to redevelop Glasgow’s East End has been given a vote of confidence
by one of the country’s top politicians.

A plan to turn the area into a bustling hub for jobs, manufacturing, commerce
and sport has been backed by Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy. He went on a
fact-finding tour of the area led by senior officials from Europe’s biggest
regeneration organisation.

Billions of pounds are to be injected, which will lead to the creation of a new
industrial base, new housing and amenities. The ambitious project will span 20
years and is being spearheaded by the Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration
Company, which aims to create 21,000 new jobs by 2027.

Training courses are to be laid on for locals to boost their chances of cashing
in on the jobs boom while work starts next month on the Clyde Gateway Business
Park, a 30-acre derelict site off London Road which could generate 1,500 jobs.
And the advent of the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in 2014 will also
boost jobs.

Standing at Bridgeton Cross, which is undergoing a £1million upgrade, Mr Murphy
said he is confident the 21,000-job target will be achieved over two decades.

He added: “It’s absolutely brilliant. The area will be entirely transformed and the
lives of the people in the East End will be a lot better. There is a spirit and a
determination here among the people who are good and decent. Their lives will
be transformed for the better.”

Stewart Gold, 23, of Bridgeton, was unemployed until he got a job as a ground
worker with Land Engineering, which is carrying out the Cross upgrade. He
benefited after regeneration chiefs struck a deal with the firm to employ five
local apprentices to help carry out the work.
