Cracker of a documentry is on at 2am thursday 12 /nov on BBC4 Well worth recording
All about the yards in Govan and Clydebank in the sixties and seventies
Thanks for the link Cybers.Work in one of the few big Engineering factories left myself and really enjoyed this.A weld done documentary.
(Ok i'll get ma jacket as well !)
Right after watching this again i am still astounded how thick the shop stewards are.
I fail to see how they can heap praise upon themselves when they were instrumental in the demise of the industry as a whole.
All for unionism and the protection it offers but they touched on the merest of detail about it 27 unions and nane o thum working at the same time...
As for Jimmy Reid He stayed the course with his Communistic ways wit part of red square wiz that he wiz sitting in...
Probably ruffled a few feathers with this but I am sure there are plenty more that probably agree with me. _________________ MY FLICKR

cybers,i am a born and bred bankie where jimmy was a town councillor at one time.i always had a great respect for him but i felt a bit uneasy when he chose to sup wi satan by taking on a wee column in the sun a few years ago.i think the piece in the film you are talking about was filmed in his house,[victorian villa] i think in rothesay.
My old man was a steward in the early 70's in the Rolls at EK.Always seemed to be a march , demo or a walk out every second week for one reason or another.Met Jimmy Reid a couple of times at some of them.
We had a couple of Stewards in my place that eventually went on to be Councillors.Don't know about thick but certanly misguided in a lot of instances.
My claim to fame is being a best mate thro' school of Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream whose old man was a union head honcho at one time.Spent many a night as a youth laying out and collecting in chairs at halls for various meetings.
However with virtually powerless unions and plenty of co-operation in the Rolls and other engineering establishments over the last few years they are still being dismantled due to competition from China and India.
