Who'd have guessed that one small district in the suburbs of Glasgow would generate so much interest and valuable contribution that's now onto it's 3rd thread?
Once again many thanks to all those who have contributed either pictures or anecdotal accounts or both. Your additions are what has made this topic one of the most successful on UG. On behalf of Admin and his dog... Thankyou
OK folks it's round three so fire away.... _________________ ______________________________________________________

Hi all,I remember the prefabs at the Priesthill end of Cleeves Road very well
.I walked my girlfriend up that road to her parents house regularly. One of
the guys we used to meet at Paisley Ice Rink lived in one of the prefabs.
The brick works were still in operation in those days also.
Hi folks. In reply to Jock 58's most recent post, yes I do remember the wee shop across from the UNITAS building . We used to frequent it on a Sunday on occasion but more often than not we would walk down through Thornliebank past the Bowling Green on the left and visit the sweet shop just beyond. In the winter this was at my request as the wee hut Jock58 refers to didn't sell "Victory V Lozenges" Does anyone remember them or am I the only saddo? I also remember the house you refer to Jock and know this was a throwback to when the area was the industrial area I mentioned previously. (when the area was used for fabric printing and dyeing) This industry in Spiersbridge was the domain of the Crum Family who not only operated the Printing concern but were also responsible for the generation of the Thornliebank area in the 1850's. Walter Crum was involved in the development of not only the UNITAS Building but the Library next to it, the Church at Spiersbridge but most significantly the purchase of Rouken Glen. I also remember the "Puggy " Jock but I thought for years it got it's name from the fact that when Arden was first built there was no access whatsoever to Carnwadric where my Gran lived as did yours, so people had no choice but to walk over the spare ground which was essentially just a field. This obviously very quickly became a ploughed field and was very muddy and messy which in my 4 or 5 year old brain translated to "Puggy" In fact the name comes from the single engine used to shunt railway carriages or trucks about. In fact I remember seeing one such engine on the line on more than one occasion.I can't quite remember the circumstances and don't know if the tracks were lifted and relaid (just where Hopeman Road is now) when it became necessary to do so. Today I spoke to one or two people regarding the Landfill up at Southpark and they seem to be of the same mind as myself. I will continue to check this out. One last observation for now. After reading all the posts (in too short a time and has therefore become a bit of a blur) I don't remember much if anything being mentioned about the Hurlet. Turning left at the lights on the Hurlet leads you into a wee village type place. (immediate left through the gap in the wall) And further on if you turn up Grahamstone Road towards Dykebar then a quick left into Grahamstone Place there is a row of about twelve cottages (semi detached) They seem to have been built at different times, about haf and half, but the first two sets have plaques or inscriptions dating back to 1870. Miners cottages? I'm gonna stop babbling now. It's probably because I'm not allowed to talk much at home. Stephen.
Thanks for giving us all something other subjects to explore Stephen.
James Crum was as I understand part of the Crum family you referred to.
I am sure there are lots of photos of various members of the Crum family on the East Renfrewshire Council heritage site.
They cottages you mentioned Stephen sound interesting. Do you think the residents would mind someone taking photos?
A third thread who would have believed that this would have kept running. If I am not mistaken it has been less than a year that thread two has been on the go.
Well done for all the contributions
I hope to get something to post up soon that may help to take us to a fourth thread. _________________ I had a dream today
Good stuff about Nitshill and environs..
There should be lots more stories and 'legends' about growing-up in the area.
A site I came across several years ago still has some great flashback materials...

Hi folks. Just a quick thank you to Mr.Underwood for the confirmation regarding the prefabs next to the brickworks. I've been digging into my memory so much in the last week or so I thought I was beginning to make stuff up. Like yourself Mr. Underwood I was just a tourist. In my case I was in the area only when I went to visit yet more cousins who lived in the tenements in Glenmuir Drive which also have fallen foul of the demolition man. Stephen.(new kid on the Brock)
Stephen I have a vague memory of the prefabs there as a 10 year old exploring in the 70`s, might be exaggerating, but there ye go memory is playing up:roll: _________________ I was in a Tunnel on another forum and I came out here. fcuk, who shut the door !
