High rise demolition in Germiston

does anyone know when the high rise flats at Forge Place in Germiston are coming down? been looking for a time and date but can't see anything online.

the block looks out towards Red Road but i think it's being blown down as it has all the windows and doors removed and the GHA banner like Sighthill and Shawbridge.
discominer

Forge Place is already down and Coll Place (to which I think you refer) is coming down on Sunday...

brilliant, will be there - anyone got an exact time?
maximusmop

2 am but i am going to visiting the site friday to find out, the 2 am time was given to me the last time i visited the site!
Kevin_Mc

i reckoned 2am, can't see it being nearer 6 o'clock. 2 of half two i reckon, let us know!
maximusmop

was up at the site yesterday and was informed demolition 2am blowdown but am going up now for a final llok see, stay tuned!
Kevin_Mc

anyone got a definate time for this?

We'll be there (probably Broomfield Road) from about half 1 onwards.
maximusmop

the time i am giving comes from the crib sheet the police and stewards currently have, i was at the site at 7.30 pm so 2am blowdown can be confirmed.
BIG BILL

I heard the bangs about 1.30am 15.5.2011 from my house in Barmulloch. why are the blow-downs never done at the time they tell people. very unfair to people wanting to view these.
Kevin_Mc

the demolition time was 01:35!

i literally opened the back door to step out and heard the boom. took a drive up anyway and one of the Stewards on Broomfield Road said she felt rotten cause they had been telling people it was between 2:00 and 3:00, then at 2:00 then ten minutes before it came down they got a radio message to say it was going ahead at 01:35.

Lesson learned for next time, leave a full hour before the suggested time.

I AGREE EVERY TIME I VISITED THE SITE I WAS BEING TOLD 2AM, AND I NOW FEEL SILY FOR POSTING THIS INFO(I AM SORRY) BUT I WAS THERE AT THE PRESS TENT AND WORD SPREAD AT 1AM IT WAS GOING TO BE A 1.30 BLOWDOWN THE TIME THEN CHANGED TO 1.35 AM WITH TWO SIRENS AT 1.20AM AND 1.30AM WITH A 30 SECOND BANG, WILL POST VID SOON
Micehorns

I was told by Safedem that it would not happen until well after 2am, one person said it would be closer to 3am. They made a blog about the unimportant things (for a lot of people) then when it comes to the part most people followed the blog for, they don't give much information. This was the first demo I missed because the time scale was too sketchy.

I caught the demolition on camera from about 10 miles away completely by accident. No point in posting the pictures, as it's just a light in the distance disappearing.

i agree micehorns but after the failed demolition of qes in the gorbals in 1993 the exact demolition time is a closely guarded secret, demolition company would prefer no crowds at these events so no one could be potentily injured, that said safedem has a habit of sometimes knocking the buildings down early, as i was on route to the dalmarnock demolition when i heard the bangs a full hour before the scheduled 12 noon blowdown.

I arrived with all my friends just 5 mins before the demolition! What lucky timing.  We literally set up the camera and then heard the final siren.  We were then back in the car and home before 2am even rolled around!!  What lucky timing ....  Didn't even have time to drink the thermos of tea that we made.

you've no reason to be sorry at all, even the stewards were expecting 2am.

i wanted to leave the house at 1am (and get there at 10 past) but was outvoted then heard it as i opened the door to leave :(

since someone mentioned QES demolition, one of the lecturers at my uni was in charge of the countdown for that - he was talking about it the other week in a lecture.

i know but as i posted several times the 2am blowdown time i feel just as bad as the stewards, but safedem have a history of pulling down flats early, the last block at dalmarnock being another one i can think of!

Will there be anything built on the site of the two later blocks?  I presume that the location of the two blocks are still unoccupied patches of grass.
