Aaargh, why have flickr messed about?

Anybody logged onto their flickr page tonight and found it messed about with?

Its awful, if I wanted it to be more like facebook I would join facebook.
cybers

I think it actually works better now ... though its nice to get your own info presented first but it was always community based ideas first and foremost with Flickr.

Can still click you on the top left and choose recent activity but as far as i know there no way to return it to the old way.
BTJustice

I'm going to see about chucking my pro account. After looking at it for 10 minutes I can see no advantage.

Previously it was a nice clear layout but now looks like all my pictures have been dropped on the floor and when I bent down to pick them up I had my face smashed into them.

They have tried to jaz it up, same way photobucket did and photobucket is unusable now as well.
cybers

Photobucket at least has a tab to return to old interface .... probably be removed soon though with fluckr doing this
James

It's fecking sh!t.

Glad I'm no longer a Pro member.

I'm joining Deviant Art this week, as it has no limits on uploads. The layout never changes either.

They are a wee bit ahem secular on Deviant... upload unlimited sounds like a wheeze as when i signed up it was 500mb and still was up till before xmas as I was still getting mails to upgrade my account.

At home now and it's working no too bad.

Just have to get used to it.

I quite like this new format as you said it's just a matter of getting used to working with it.

Seems to be a myth flying around the subs have been doubled but its still the usual £16 here ... i kinda like it too now i have had a look around it.

Its very windows 8 ... though windows 8 is buggy as hell.

Nope, it's still fecking sh!t.

I dont fear change, evolution is great but this is not what I paid for.

This is like taking away my encyclopedia britannica and replacing it with a beano.

The whole thing is now targeted towards iphone users and social media twatts who want to have a quick look for a picture to steal for their facebook page while sitting on a bus.

Appologies for the dead links that will appear when I shut down my flickr account and try and get my money back.

Tooooo far
norrie

I am getting used to Photobucket but it still crashes at times
I cant walk away from if, too many red crosses will appear on this site and others

One thing I dont like, if I load a photos , lets say its an older one, I have to post it on a web site right away because after you shut down it moves the photo to date order
So with all the photos I have I would never find it, I have brought this up witht Photobucket, the old system left if at the page you posted it on.

You have reminded me I have a flickr account, will need to see whats going on and if I still have an account
Stuball

It needed a radical change... it was old and stale the way it was

According to Flickr
Pro accounts are no longer offered as they try to streamline into an ad generated revenue model. (Yahoo after all)

Previous pro subscriptions if meeting of eligible criteria shall be cancelled at the users request and the remaining value of the subscription returned.

All pro users once reaching the end of thieir subscription will move to free 1tb accounts though the option will be retained to renew subscriptions and keep flickr ad free (This may be subject to change in the future)

So it seems it will be a win win situation for all if you want to put up with some ads.

Code:
Or install Adblock Plus if yi don't
norrie

Hi Cybers, I got an email about this update to Flickr, forgot I had joined it
1 tr of storage, cant be bad
One wee problem, I cant figure out how to copy a photo from the set up, I can get a link but for the life of me I cant get it to show on any web sites
Anny tips?

But the layout's sh!te and you can't see recent activity, comments and favourites very easily. You also need to shell out the $50 if you want stats.

The best thing about Flickr was the groups, and thankfully they haven't fucked them up yet.

BTJustice - when you get your refund they turn it into a free account and you can just leave it as is then you won't break the links.

I like 500px because its more about photographers and it has the facility to put sets behind a password, and the stories feature is really nice. The Plus account is the same price as Flickr pro was, there's also awesome which gives some extra features but is unnecessary for most users.
norrie

Hi Beano, great will try what you show
Cant see me using Flickr for much except when I have to load other members photos, it will save my Photobucket getting cluttered and less chance of me deleting their photos in the future
Thanks for your help
cybers

Better with the BBcode option Norrie ... Ignore that auld fart we do it new school since we got rid of the slates and chalk ...

Just click the BBcode Option and select all in the box and paste to the board of your choice.
Norrie..... take cybers advice my post removed
fastnet

I have just noticed that someone is now following me.....

Should I be worried ?.....

They have nothing on their photo stream and only one favourite pic...... Mine,

Seriously though.

Has this replaced the add as a contact button or is it just another option ?
cybers

Its the new social aspect of Yahoo.... if you look your contacts have went tata and have been replaced by the title followers... pain in the arse and a bit late to the social network party. Think the facebook integration has been removed as well as I used to see some peoples photos first on Facebook before I seen them on Flickr but that has not been the case for weeks now.
Marblez

Whatever you do stay away from "Try our new photo experience" ... it's an experience well worth NOT having ... and yes as Cybers said FN it's all about the "social network" integration of flickr which I for one am not too happy about ...

I de-activated my fb a/c (since I am not allowed to delete it... so much for "choice" ) and I am not interested in bird noises. Unfortunately the people now in charge of flickr are. I await the changes ......
Lone Groover

Whiaaaa

Can't seem to post any photos from Flickr any more. bb code option went missing. Any clues???

Only has links to fb twatter etc

Still in the usual place for me mate.

I can even copy your pic.

Not with the new and exciting (sh1t) photo experience. I tried it, disliked it and went back to what was forced upon us at the last change.

It's apparently not included on the new experience yet. So back to the previous one

You saved our lives ..... we are eternally grateful .....

In all fairness it's just people bookmarking your page because they like your photos .. just someone in charge believes that by "twitterising" flickr they can make it seem more "hip" .... nothing to get your knickers in a twist over
fastnet

Who is getting their knickers in a twist ?...

I know how it works." I just don't like it.

I was lucky if I got one or two contacts every six months. 15 in two days seems a bit excessive to me.
cybers

PMSL ....
perhaps you have posted something others like it could be redirects from the very pages of here as i know this is where many of mine originate from ... click stats find out what the referrer site was ... I would bet either google search or urbanglasgow are the culprits.... fcuk sakes urban glasgow generates almost 50+ views daily alone in my flickr feed.
Marblez

Who knows how these things work - I know there have been approx 2000 views of Past & Present IV on here since I posted my 1996/2013 pics and yet some are still in single figures on flickr

What I can't understand is what there is not to like about people liking your photos, at least you get off your backside and head off to places outwith Glasgow with your camera... which I certainly don't

I have six new contacts since joining UG so I can only assume is part of the reason for that

Yer a great photographer and people want to see your photos - all is good

Maybe it's just the following thing.

The view counts on Flickr are only incremented if someone clicks through to your photo page. Views on sites like this don't count also the new layout of the home page gives people the opportunity to make a shot a favourite without increasing the view count. so in theory you could have a shot with a higher favourite count than views.
Marblez

Alan, the point I was trying to make is that a lot of my Glasgow photos are more relevant to people on this forum as opposed to flickr. There is such a diverse collection of subjects on flickr that people are more subjective in the stuff they look at (hence the reason there are a plethora of similar groups)

The other point you raise is equally valid in that due to the layout and the way flickr works you can "look" at a photo without having to click on it specifically (which the increments the view count)

I am not stating that it was my photos alone which were responsible for the amount of views (though I would like to think they contribute to the total) as there are loads of other interesting pics on the thread. I have a potential project in mind and I am trying to gauge whether it would be worth undertaking and all the signs so far are looking positive
cybers

Cleared the cache on my pooter logged into flickr and its all back to normal except the following thing...

No more timeline layout ??? WTF
Marblez

OK - what's going on Last night I uploaded a photo onto flickr which I then posted on the BAE Cranes thread. A mere 24 hours later said photo has 270 views on flickr yet it is not in any groups .  My highest view on a photo to date was 145 on one I posted six weeks ago. The photo has NO comments and is not a favourite ... Any suggestions
cybers

Its getting views on here that are logging in flickr if it is set up right and you do seem to be using your bbcode with the linkback.

Took me a while to figure that one out a while back.
Marblez

If that is the case then why are the other photos posted at the same time all in single figs - is it because people are clicking on the photo ? It's the only logical explanation if it is what you say Davie
cybers

Yup ... clicking the photo to see it larger if you have stats enabled then it will show up in there as UG referrer though the image i selected here is flickr only you get the idea.

Flickr as is their wont are now advertising Photo Books ... with their wee pink "NEW" box to make sure your eye catches it. On clicking said option you are then presented with your albums ... select an album to be enticed with an offer to "Surprise Mom for only $10" ..... next click - magically it creates your photobook !!! However, unlike any other photobook creation tool I have used, this one just creates a page for each photo, irrespective of size - and if you read the small print it states "Shipping to US Only" ...... so WTF are they advertising it in Scotland !!!!!!!!!

Oh I forgot I lived in the 53rd state ...........
BTJustice

I can ignore the adverts and I can almost live with the layout but its still so slow.

I used to like looking through groups but now it takes ages to scroll down through the pics, there is a hiddeous white info box on the left. Worse still is if you open a picture for a closer look you are returned to the top of the group page when you close the picture and have to start the slow scroll down the page again to find where you were.

I am also hating the fact you need to select the size of the picture every time you go to get the bbcode. I used to be able to leave it on my preferred size and it would remain at that setting for the next time.

I would love to see their figures to see how many users and how much revenue they have lost since the changes started.

Dave.

Yahoo are offering the option of a conversion on your account to a YaHoo account so you will lose nothing. How this will affect young Steven there with his mild disability is something YaHoo have not taken into account. As Flickr makes the move to more of a social experience for Photographers this day was always going to come. The thing is will Google etc now restrict the ability to pay for what is left of pro accounts on YaHoo as some sort of protest in return.

Personally I could not care less as I have many accounts across many providers from the old school days when they all wanted to be different and all the best. Now they are racing towards a FaceAche model with no real plan on being different.

Hi John McKnight,

You take beautiful, authentic photos and I'd love to add some of your Flickr photos to CrowdMedia's collection in a profile made just for you, with your copyright and your attribution.

CrowdMedia is a new place where thousands of photographers like you reveal how they see our world and get their photos discovered by publishers.

To help you get more visibility, we might push some of your photos to editorial publishers (no commercial use).
If they select your photo, they pay a fee and we share half the revenue with you through Paypal. There is no work for you, we take care of everything.

You automatically get a link back to your Flickr with your CrowdMedia profile. And you can add a link to your personal website as well in your CrowdMedia profile.

It is always free for photographers. There is no obligation. You can opt-out when you want in 2 clicks.

If you want to try, all you have to do is answer Yes and I will send your photos’ link in crowdmedia.co when it is done.

Thanks,

Martin

I  received this on flickr mail.

Hello Ben, your images are great.

Would you be interested in selling some of your pictures for my photography site? I can offer a regular cooperation, I usually offer $60-$70 per picture

If interested, please send me a message to ( his e-mail address) as I'm not logging in to Flickr often.

I then sent this reply

I thank you for your interest on my Flickr account regarding the possible purchase of photographs, all  images must be cleared individually before use by author.
The price must be agreed beforehand and any money transfers paid through my Paypal account.
Kind regards,
Ben Allison.

Never did hear from them again    I think it's a scam for bank details mate

Hi Guys,

Seems there is a wee issue just now in the BBCode options of Flickr.
This is causing little issues with the layout of the page. Below i have
included a quick wee graphic to help things along and keep the page
justification intact.

In the first image all the highlighted argument needs to be on another
line, So if you put your cursor between the url][url and hit enter this
will solve the coding issues and give you a similar layout as image two.
You could also just delete all of the text highlighted as the photo still
carries the Flickr page redirect as laid out in their community rules.

Cheers, Cybs
