He has a good turn of speed... Not seen a deerhound in years. Last one I seen actually chasing a deer was up Delgaty near Turriff and it tried to pump it when it caught the bugger.

Now the question is ?........ Did it get his Nat King ?..

I am hoping that the flapping about was an unconscious muscle reflex as I wouldnt like to think it was alive at that point.

This looks to me to be a racing pigeon and kills by any hawk or falcon are far from clean or quick. The quarry is pinned to the ground using the talons of one claw. The more the quarry struggles the tighter the talons grip, like a vice. The quarry's wing shoulders are nibbled severing nerves and tendons preventing flight and escape. The quarry is plucked usually chest first, and strips of meat are torn off. The chest muscles are the main flight muscles. The stripping continues until a main blood vessel is severed, and the quarry will then die.

Photos have been posted on-line of pigeons arriving home with all the feathers of the head and neck plucked and the flesh eaten down to the vertebra, so yes, the quarry can remain alive for a very long time.
