Auschwitz-Birkenau

Not the nicest of places but.....

Auschwitz-Birkenau was the principal and most notorious of the six concentration and extermination camps established by Nazi Germany to implement its Final Solution policy which had as its aim the mass murder of the Jewish people in Europe.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of the concentration camp complexes created by the Nazi German regime and was the one which combined extermination with forced labour. At the centre of a huge landscape of human exploitation and suffering, the remains of the two camps of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, as well as its Protective Zone were placed on the World Heritage List as evidence of this inhumane, cruel and methodical effort to deny human dignity to groups considered inferior, leading to their systematic murder.

Krakow (inc Auschwitz)

Hi guys.  Remembered that I had been on holiday with my younger brother to Krakow.  Finally dug out the pics, here are some of the better ones.

This is the iconic railway track at the extermination camp Birkenau.  Inside the camp gates the track was 1km long, trains delivered 7000 POW per day, the majority being Jewish.  It is said that no wildlife enters the grounds of this place, the ghost of mass death still remains, having been there I can well believe it.

'Arbeit Macht Frei' - Work will set you free.  The famous gates to Auschwitz concentration camp.

Statue in the market square.  The square is reportedly the largest in Europe, can well believe it.

Already a thread for this buddy...

My one regret about not following Motherwell to the Cup Winners Cup match against Katowice was the lost opportunity to head along the road to Auschwitz.

Went to Krakow last week and visited this place.

Not the nicest place in the world to visit but I am glad I went.
