Two small bakeries in Cathcart Road that I used to frequent, sorry no photos.

Between the Dixon Halls and Alison Street there was a small bakery where the baker made these buns called "torpedos".  Big long currant bun covered in icing!  6d   Gave you energy enough for the afternoon.

Alistar's Bakery (or did he spell it Alistair?).  Cathcart Road, just road the corner form Calder Street.  Early morning, coming off the night shift I couldn't resist the smell.  Fresh baked rolls - still warm   Heaven!

Hi Beano

I didn't know that, I thought it was something just this baker did.  They were great.

Thanks Cybers, next time I'll make sure my piccy is the right way up before I post !

Back to reality though, I can't remember there being too many bakeries in 'theDrum' in the late 1950's.  In fact there wasn't too much of anything when it came to shops.

My dear mother, though, (and I'm sure lots of mothers and grandmothers around that time) used to make absolutely fantastic pies in her tin ashets.

Even now I try hard to emulate her efforts but I just can't get that distinctive taste she could produce !

cybers

Did you try a Dug in place of coo !!!
tombro

There weren't too many dugs around 'theDrum' in those days, Cybers, so Ma had to buy her meat from the butcher's !

Sale of dug meat is illegal over here so I have to try meat from the butchers too, although what we get is a far cry from the quality that is exported.

I think the export market is the same the world over Tombro.
When the mad cow scandal broke and no one wanted UK beef the shops were suddenly filled with great cuts but with the added stress of russian roulette....
But as usual by the time the bods in power told us it was too late to be worrying.
Now that the exportation of beef is back we get something that resembles an untanned moccasin as steak.
