Great photos!
I don't know what the "unknown building" with Merc badge is called, but I went up to the observation tower on the roof when I visited Berlin in 1972. It was evening and I don't have photos, but it was a great view! The Merc badge used to rotate. Does it still do that?
TV transmitter . I went up there too! Twice. !972 and 1977. I have photos somewhere. Will try and dig them out and scan them.

Yes, but so slowly it doesn't really show up in a photo.

That would be good to see them. Did you take any shots of the Palace of the Republic from there?

I have found some of them. Here they are. All October 1977.
Brandenburg Gate from West Berlin
Berlin Wall
Looking over the wall. There were platforms one could climb up.
View from the tv tower in East Berlin
Another view from the tv tower, towards Unter den Linden and the Brandenburg Gate. I think the Palace of the Replublik is off to the left of the main road and not in the photo.
Brandenburg Gate from East Berlin. THe chaps in the photo are RAF. I asked them about being in uniform. They said it was obligatory for military personnel to be in uniform on visits to the other side so that it was clear that they were military and that they couldn't be accused of being spies.

When I wrote the bit above, I thought the Palace of the Republik was further to the left.
I have done a bit of digging into old maps and photos on the web and have realised that I got the edge of the palace on the left hand side of the photo opposite the cathedral.
This link has a photo from the tv tower. The pattern of the skylights is the same.

Here a couple more photos I found. Same trip Oct 1977.
Checkpoint Charlie
Picture of a shop window in Unter Den Linden. I took a photo of it because it was almost the only thing with any bright colour in it that I saw in East Berlin that day. The photo shows Honneger and Breschnev. The text above is in praise of the recently signed Friendship agreement between the DDR and Soviet Union.
From the train leaving East Germany to go back into the west. The guard allowed his dog to roam under the train to "greet" any travellers who might hiding there.
