The old lock keepers house is a good building to go into, also if you head down from it you get to the river and follow another path along to the Saltings Ecology Park, a marsh near the Erskine Bridge, abundant with wildlife (and no not UG-ers!!!!)

Boats

Reallyshould look into transport one of my boats up there. At least it would give me a excuse to visit more often.
harky2402

Out yesterday, finally got to see the drop-lock at Dalmuir in operation...

Stuball

A sail down the canal seems such a fuss and waste of time now. You need a crew of men following you by road to operate all the locks!
Beano

Terrific set Allan
Tosh

Nice pics, the mrs and i like to nip down there for a walk, 10 mins from the house and your in the country, great wee place :)
sputnik

what area are you in tosh if you dont mind me asking.it takes me 1 minute to get to the canal towpath from my place .i love walking along to bowling.
Tosh

Well 10 mins by car, im in the kinning park area, just a quick blast down the motorway and were there, the place reeks of old boats!!
wouldnt mind hiring a canal boat for a week or 2 :)

Bowling

I can remember being told in the 70's by an old Eastfield engine driver that Bowling had a unique place in world history

He told me that Bowling was the ONLY place in the world where 2 mainline railways, 2 waterways and 2 roadways all ran parallel to each other and are within close proximity of each other. I suppose this could have been true till one of the railways and the canal closed. I was wondering if this is true again with the re-opening of the canal.

I wonder if anyone can find or think of anywhere else where this happens or was I having my leg pulled.
Doog Doog

You're not having your leg pulled. There were 2 lines, one built by the Caley, the other North British. They converged at Dumbarton where the branch to Balloch had joint-running powers.

1950...Bowling basin, does anyone know the significance of this date?
peter kemp

Was that when canal was last used commercially by fishing boats??

Could be Peter but not sure. Canal did not close till 1962 so I'm guessing that any traffic (including fishing boats) could have used it until then. I've asked around in Bowling but no-one including the staff working there seem to know.
