I don't rate the Kodak at all - I've got a Z100 kicking about - the camera I had before getting my DSLR, and it really struggles with a lot of situations particularly when using the flash and the shutter lag is ridiculous.

The only compacts I would really rate are those made by companies that also have a hand in the more serious market. Panasonic make some nice P&S models (with their Leica backup) as do Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji.

The Kodak is quite bulky and chunky and the camera in your phone would probably give better results than the Vivitar. The long end of the zoom on the Kodak would be virtually unusable without a tripod in most conditions.

Why not have a look at the Panasonic DMC-LZ7, my Dad got one of these and its quite good and also has image stabilisation built in.

I'd go for the Pano I have the 5meg pixel one.
I use that more than my minolta now.

Hi All

I was looking into buying a tele-converter (is that the correct name) as I'm too cheap to go for a bigger lens than I have.

I though I would ask here for a few tips as there seems to be a very large price range.

At the moment i have a Canon 1000D and a Tamron 18-200mm lens.

Basically what should i be looking for? and do you lot have any recommendations ? money is an object so i need to look more at the lower end of the price scale.

you can get a good deal on a 1.4x converter from Ebay but to buy new you are as well looking at other lens options... 2x converters are rarer than hens teeth and again i would be looking at ebay rather than buying new m8 .... though a much cheaper option all round would be to get an EF series canon 75-300 from you guessed it .. good deals cheaper than a tele-converter option on this lens just now.

Hi Cybers

Thanks for that, I can't believe the price of that lens.
Food for thought there i will look into that option.
One of the main reasons i was thinking of a converter was the fact i would not need to carry another lens.

personally i would always go with another lens rather than drop off in image quality by putting in a converter.

A teleconvertor will reduce your effective aperture and your AF won't work as it won't get enough light to operate as a result teleconvertors are only really a viable option on fast lenses

No offence Alan perhaps this is a problem native to Sony but not had this problem on any of my canon or sigma lenses when mated up to a jessops 1.4x converter.

dickyhart

yes stu, it is,

seems to have just stopped working, and it keeps poppibg up as well when i dont want it to. cheapest quote i got was 155 to fix it.
AlanM

that sounds about right - might be as well picking up a speedlight instead

Hi all

Taking all comments under advisement, I opted for the Kenko 2x MC7 DGX Tele-converter.

Mostly i have gone for this option to save on gear i need to carry on holiday.

I will post a few results once it arrives and i have given it a good test.
