Care/Nursing Homes

My mother recently died in one of Glasgow’s Private ‘care homes’ and before anyone thinks that I am bitter and grieving about her death in this place, this is not the case, however whilst she was in the ‘care home’ we had to raise several complaints about her ‘care’ or ‘lack off.’

I now have another relative that requires nursing care and his family are looking at this very same place, the trouble is very few establishments take folks with ‘nursing care needs’ and what’s more Social Work and other agencies are not great at informing you of ‘continuing healthcare’ and as a result a letter has been duly despatched asking for a refund to my mother’s estate (unlikely to happen but worth a try).

It really made me think, despite Care Inspectorate reports that you can freely look online at to see how they rate the place as I found the Care Inspectorate reports to really bear no relation to the place my mother was in on the city’s GWR.

So my question is what in UG’s posters view and experiences: the best and the worst care homes from your perspective?

Sorry for your experiences involving these homes.
We chose to let the wicked Step-mother see out her time at our house after my dad went. We had no intention of her passing off with strangers and we were already open to the fact they might be horrible to her or just not provide the care for her needs. The fact she was an ongoing cancer patient when she shuffled off the planet made her care a little more awkward but we just had to step up and see out her wishes not to be left in
"one of those frappin places" (she very rarely swore)

I doubt you will receive a penny from the bastards and as for the Inspectorate .....they are worse than useless. People make complaints they will look into it but never do. My pals mum worked in the care home on Castlemilk Drive and she reported a colleague for hitting an elderly resident and she was suspended with the perpetrator until the investigation was concluded.

They probably get 'tipped off' there's an inspection so that on the day, everything is up to scratch..
I remember my granny down south went into a care home and it soon became clear she wasn't getting the proper care. After a lot hassle on my aunt & uncle's part, she went into another care home where her every need was attended to.

Although I agree with this comment Doug I do think that they are not all the same. There are bad homes but some are really good and do what is required to make life comfortable for our elderly loved ones in their final years.

I am happy to say that we were pretty pleased with the care and attention my mum received in her 5 years in a care home in the south side of Glasgow. Yes, you can always see things that could be improved but I think they went that extra mile and managed to keep her in the non nursing care home knowing that a stay in hospital would be too much for her. I wouldn't want their job and praise where it is due.

So glad mum wasn't one of the poor people who seem to lack good care in such places.

I don't have experience with care homes, but I do with nurseries/child day care.  The reports do, at times, lack the full details, but I think (certainly the ones I've read) are close to the truth.

As for Doog Doog's concerns about the organisation being tipped off, that, in my experience, isn't the case and the unprompted inspection are really that.  I remember the utter chaos and panic it would cause within the organisation, so there was absolutely no chance that they were tipped off.
