I noticed inscriptions in the cemeteries up in cardross and the necropolis of all the young babies and kids...its sad, but i suppose in those days it was natural.

Still sad though

The very thing I was going to say. At first glance, I thought you had included an old photo for for contrast (historical, not photographic). Nice one.

It's made from encaustic floor tiles. I am told that the tiles were made by Minton

http://www.tile-heaven.co.uk/mintons-01.htm

from designs by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin

From The Columbia Guide to Standard American English (1993):

LONG S, ROUND S

Long s is one form of the letter s that was used in printing and writing English both here [America] and abroad until the end of the eighteenth century. The long s looked like a lowercase printed f, but with the crossbar only on the left of the letter; it was used initially and medially but never finally in a word, so sisters looked like this: fifters. In contrast, the s we now use everywhere was then used at the ends of words and called a round s.

If you look quickly at the middle the urn looks like a dog standing on top of one of the grave stones. If you take second look it could be an owl.

This isn't technically a cemetery, and it's a wee bit outside the city boundries, but it is the grave of one of the main trading families from Glasgow's Heyday.

Fantastic photos Stu

Will need to make a point of taking a wander up there one day. It is years since I was in the Necropolis and didn't have a camera but lots of kids doing charcoal rubbings of the memorials for a project.

Cheers :) Pretty chuffed with them myself

I'm always up for a wander to the necropolis if I'm free... you can never photograph it too much after all. So let me know when you go!

As for charcoal rubbings.... they shouldnt do that for a few reasons.... Most obvious is the conditions of the monuments and the chance of them falling. I doubt the parkies would have allowed them and the teacher was winging it. The other reason is something about the organisms that cover some of the stones....
Alex Glass

It was about 10 years ago Stu when there was not as much concern as there is now. We were trying to encourage the kids to take an interest in the history around them. Wouldn't do that sort of thing now. But the kids did enjoy their visit to the Necropolis.

Re: Old St John's Church Graveyard, Barrhead

Funny old thing, there I was searching for a "black pudding" starter for a meal we are planning when I happened upon Urban Glasgow and the picture of St John's Church Graveyard. I was born (1947) in the old Chaple House that stood along with the old Chaple, next to the graveyard. I cannot remember how long I lived there; probably 5-6 years. I left Scotland in 1963. I think I am right in saying the building in the background is (was) the old St John's Primary School. Also I think the picture of  St Conval's cemetary was taken not far from St John's Church graveyard. Forgive my "interesting" spelling of chapel.
