Fort Augustus and the Caledonian Canal

Managed to spend a great day in Fort Augustus during the May Bank Holiday this year and found this little place near Loch Ness to be crammed full with things to see.

The title should also include Loch Ness because it is here that the Great Loch starts.

The main feature of Fort Augustus is the Caledonian Canal which was designed by Thomas Telford

The Caledonian Canal was started in 1804 and although the Lock Gates are now mechanically controlled it is still a wonderful site to watch boats going either up or down the Canal through the locks.

This Boat was waiting at the top of the Locks but I am not sure if they intended to take it down for a sail up Loch Ness to Inverness

You would be deed by the time you had negotiated from the swing bridge at  Neptunes Staircase - Benavie to the drop into the Loch at Fort Augustus to the matching swing bridge if you had to wind them all by hand. Yet in a time not too far off thats exactly what they did do sometimes twice a day.

Always found the Fort to be awfy expensive but a cracking dawdle when the weather is nice.
