Gartloch Hospital

Went for a wander up here today expecting it to be all spic and span. Much to my surprise there are still a few buildings standing derelict.

nice pics, has work stopped up there?
Mahdi West

Nothing happening there at the moment but there were a couple of men in yellow jackets inspecting the buildings so perhaps there'll be movement before long.
womble

The rev Russell Barr used to take us visiting up there when we were in 5th year (Garthamlock sec.)
Not the nicest of places and sometimes the residents were a wee bit scary.
LowLight

It was always a place as a wean we were all scared of.
The stories of the patients breaking out and banging a freshly chopped head off the roof of yer car etc etc.

I went to Garthamlock Sec too womble. Probs a bit after you though.

Did you know Jim Dick?
Mahdi West

Even in the middle of the day the whole site it had a weird atmosphere despite the new houses they've built. Not somewhere I'd fancy living.

Cybers the only Anne I can remember is Anne Wright.

Lowlight I can remember The name but I mainly hung about with Ian Colvin (Golly) nd Gordon Andrews from gar T.
I spent most of my time with my cousins around various parts of the city.
Or with various bad girls from Easterhouse

If you both recognize these names you will know we were all from kincardine sq.
LowLight

I'll ask him about those names.

Think my brother left Gar-T Sec in 82-83. We stayed just round from Kincardine on Gartloch Rd, 2 closes up from the lane.
womble

he will remember a guy called docs
he always wore doc martins and once PAINTED a pair white for a laugh
LowLight

 No doubt he'll know him.

I probably demolished your old house
LowLight

Aye probably.

I left a wee car in the brick work for the guys that were gonnae demolish it. Did you find it?

True story.
John

Haha, I don`t remember that mate, but we do find all sorts of stuff.
I just had a look at my diary would it have been 965 Gartloch Rd ?
LowLight

So close. 969.
BenCooper

Did you go inside? The dining hall is simply stunning:

Some photo Ben. You'd never know it was like that from the outside. Unfortunately not as I was on babysitting duty but I've made a note to try and get back.

Never saw anyone mate.

I was just walking around the fenced off area though. Someone could have been watching from inside.
horza

Don't know about 24 hour but there is definitely security. Bumped into him a couple of weeks ago but was fairly decent.
cybers

Bumped into a wee guy in a wee white van a few times while scoping... HE may not be on site all the time just when i seem to be there

Decent enough guy who now points at me and yells yir still no getting in and both of us just laugh. Had a wee bit of a blether with him last time and he said there is a plan in the pipe to convert it to an office block away from the original residential plans. Canny see the residents being too happy. Though that kinda is historical when you think about it
horza

The guard we met was saying that they are going to be knocking down the building which houses the main hall but didn't know when. He also mentioned that the other remaining buildings were still fit for conversion but I guess its up to everyone whether you chose to believe that or not!
Stuball

I think the guard is in a compound just a little down from the main site. When I accidently entered one of the buildings, he suddenly appeared.

Hi,

1st post so please be kind :)

I noticed in pics 1, 3 & 5 which where posted by fastnet, there appears to be an earlier constructed wall that the hospital seems to be built over.

Does anyone know if this was part of an older building that was orginally on the site?

Cheers
Stuball

I see what you mean... to me it looks like there was an extension thats been demolished and the hole bricked up with different stonework than the rest of the building

oh, and welcome to UG
