Glasgow Crossrail Plans c.1994

"...Could be up and running by 1998-99..."

It's a mad enough plan that it just might work. I wonder if they realise that doing feasibility studies isn't actually doing the work.

The plan shown above doesn't re-instate the former G&SWR line from Gorbals
Junction to Strathbungo junction. Given that the bridges and viaducts are all still
in place this always struck me as daft, but IIRC they may have been planning to
bulldoze them (    ) as part of the M74 extension at that time.

The current "plans" do include using the original G&SW line, though.

Looks like a great idea scrap feasability studies these never work.
They neglect to ask the opinion of those the service is aimed at.
Build the bugger then spend the feasability money convincing Joe Punter to use the new service.

The feasability study concerning Edinburgh's new tram service seemed to involve a few junkets to Holland then a few to Newcastle then just to be sure a few more to Germany.
These worked out really well and they decided to go ahead with the plan.
Then somehow came up with the idea to stick the depot for said trams in the busiest intersection in Edinburgh.

How do i get on these junkets ?
How do i get to cash in on the feasability study.
On second thoughts i would just like to be able to motor from the High Court to City Chambers in a timely fashion.

Actually (and I stand to be corrected) but they *do* invite the opinion of the public
on these things. The problem seems to be it is incredibly poorly advertised so that
by the time Joe Public hears about it, the "public consultation period" has passed.

Using the c.1994 Crossrail proposal as an example, I read about it in a very small
piece in the Evening Times. SPTE/the council hired a piece of office space in a disused
office building at the corner of West George Street and Dundas Street next to Queen
St Station (it's now some poncy pub) and this included a video playing on some
TV screens and a series of leaflets being handed out. I took one and that is what
you see scanned in above.

I'm sure it ran for less than a week and most people outside (Queen Street railway
station and two busy bus stops) seemed to be blissfully unaware of what the place
was for, or that they were perfectly welcome to come in and find out.

*That's* the problem IMHO.

Looking at it again I notice the Bridgegate station where Paddies Market is. Could that be the real reason why the cooncil is so keen to see the place closed or is it all the illegal tobacco, fags, alcohol, drugs, stolen goods, and pirated cd's and dvd's at the back of the court they want to stop? Some of us can't get up to the fruit market to buy our dodgy consumables you know cooncil.

fruit market is pretty clean from dodgy stuff... maybe cause its council run

Aye, but I'm not sure if it was at the time. The office they used was empty again
after the "public consultation period" finished.

That office may have been empty, but the building was their HQ at the time (and still is)

This is another scheme that I would remove from the remit of the SPT, it is a nationally strategic rail link that could be expanded from its current form into a massive North/South and East/West link, cutting out the current need to walk across Glasgow if you are travelling from Stirling and the North to North West England, someone really needs to be ambitious about this, if it is built in it's current form we will look back in years to come and think what an opportunity that has been missed.

I liked your idea for a station at the King St viaducts from your website. Can't
see them going for it though.

I think they've already missed an opportunity to move High St station to the West
side of the street by opening up the tunnel. What we're going to end up with is
a High St station miles away from the street which, AFAIK, won't serve the new
chord lines southwards. If they'd moved the station westwards it would've been
able to serve the new lines as well as the east-westbound services.
