Glasgow Green Spaces Project

Hey guys, I posted this over on another forum but figured you guys might find it very interesting also.

Basically, after all the work put in by the folks over on Hidden Glasgow following my initial post, I have gone around all 92 of the Glasgow Local and District Parks plus eight others that are (supposedly) run by Glasgow City Council.

Here is the result:

This set is all of the parks as we saw them. I know there are some that have issues:

- where are the signs from Bridgeton Park, Barrachnie Park, Budhill Park and Cowlairs Park. All had them at one point.
- is Garnethill Park still run by GCC
- are Breadmore Park, Moledinar Park and Spire park actually GCC owned and run or other?
- do Citizens Rose Garden, Carmunnock Village Green, Carmunnock Coppice Woodland, Greenbank Park, Bennan Square, Cathedral Square fall under parks? They don't qualify for anything else and are all GCC Green Signposted but not on Local or District Park list.
- Riddrie Park is the green space around the cemetery (confirmed by GCC and shown on new Community Council maps.

Essentially the green spaces in the city fall into one of seven categories:

Category 1 - Local and District Parks
Category 2 - Playing Fields and Sports Grounds
Category 3 - Play Parks and Play Areas
Category 4 - Riverside and other Walkways
Category 5 - Cemeteries and Hallowed Ground
Category 6 - Allotments
Category 7 - Private Parks, Gardens (not run by GCC)

I'm keen now to try and get a complete list of the other six categories for a project I might work on longer term. If you guys can contribute in anyway I would be grateful.

I believe there are 64 playing fields and sports grounds:
Alexandra Golf & Bowls, Barlia Sports Centre, Barrachnie Park Playing Fields, Bellahouston Bowls, Bellahouston Pitch & Putt, Bellahouston Sports / Leisure Centre, Blairdardie Sports Pavilion / Pitches, Blairtummock Pitches, Bonnyholm Playing Fields, Broomfield Road Playing Fields, Budhill Football
Pitch, Caldercuilt Playing Fields/Acre Road Pitch, Castlemilk Sports Centre, Cathkin Recreation Centre
and Pitches, Cowlairs Park Recreation Ground, Cranhill Beacon Play Area, Danes Drive Bowls,
Dawsholm Pitches, Drumchapel Bowls, Easterhouse Sports Centre, Garscadden Playing Fields /
Pavilion (Peterson Park), Glasgow Green Football Centre (Fleshers Haugh), Glenconnor Park Playing Fields,
Greenfield Park Field & Football Pavillion, Haghill Pitch, Halgreen Avenue Playing Field, Holyrood Sports
Centre, James Lindsey Memorial Park Pitches, Kelso Street Pitch, Kelvingrove Bowling/Old Bowling,
King George V Playing Fields, King Georges Field, Knightswood Golf / Football, Knightswood Pitch
& Putt / Bowls, Lethamhill Golf Course, Liddesdale Road Playing Fields (St Augustine's), Linn Park
Adventure Playground, Linn Park Golf Course, Lister Street Bowls, Littlehill Golf, Lochar Park Playing Fields,
Maryhill Bowls, Mount Vernon Park Field & Football Pavilion, Muirshiel Crescent Recreation Centre,
Myreside Street Recreation Ground, Nether Pollok Playing Fields / Pavilion, Nethercraigs Sports Complex / Playing Fields, Netherton Community Centre / Temple Bowls, North Kelvinside Playing Fields, Penilee Secondary School Pitch, People's Palace / Winter Gardens, Pirie Park, Queen's Park Bowls, Pitch & Putt / Tennis, Queens Park Recreation Ground & Pavilion, Springburn Bowling, Springburn Park Playing Field, Synthetic Pitch & Pavilion, Swinton Football Pitch, Tollcross Park Field, Tollcross Park Leisure Centre, Vaila Street Open Space, Victoria Park Pitches / Bowls, Wyndford Recreation Centre / Pitch, Yoker Sports Centre

I also think there are 33 cemeteries:
Carmunnock Churchyard, Kirk Rd; Cathcart Burial Ground, Kilmailing Rd; Gorbals Old Burial Ground (now landscaped); Govan Burial Ground, 868 Govan Rd; Kirk Lane, Pollockshaws; Maryhill Churchyard, Maryhill Rd; Partick Quaker Burial Ground, Keith St; Ramshorn Burial Ground, Ingram St; Shettleston Churchyard, 1401 Shettleston Rd; St Andrew's, Church St, Baillieston; St John's; Tollcross; Tullis Street Burial Ground (now a grassed area)
Cardonald Cemetery, Mosspark Boulevard; Carmunnock Burial Ground, Windlaw Farm; Craigton Cemetery, Berryknowes Rd; Eastern Necropolis, Janefield Street; Eastwood New Cemetery, Berryknowes Rd; Eastwood Old Cemetery, Berryknowes Rd; Glasgow Necropolis, Cathedral Square, High Street; Lambhill, Tresta Rd; Linn Cemetery, Lainshaw Dr
Riddrie Park, Cumbernauld Rd; Sandymount Cemetery, Gartocher Terrace; Sighthill, Springburn Road; Southern Necropolis, Caledonia Rd,; St Kentigerns Cemetery, 951 Balmore Rd,; Tollcross Cemetery, Corbet St; Western Necropolis, Tresta Rd

I think there are five walkways: Govan Riverside Walk (GCC Green signage), River Kelving Walkway (GCC Green Signage), River Kelvin Walkway (GCC Green Signage), Levern Walkway, White Cart Way.

What I'm not as sure about are where the play areas are (that are not in parks), where the allotments are all at and where the various private parks and spaces are in the city.

Anyone up for the challenge of suggesting where they all are?

Penilee sec school pitch is still there as is the wee park next to it.

Unless there are more than one King george the fifth playing fields -
its in Renfrew... I know this cos thats where I work out of!
Gary Brown

Cheers Doog Doog. I think its the actual field in King George V Park on the Glasgow side it refers to - so the park field. Forum Index -> Urban Adventures, Exploration & Photography
