Glasgow in Minecraft

Hello there.  I am currently working on the City of Glasgow in Minecraft.  It is going to be a long, massive project.  It started on 12/01/2013.  As of 20/02/2013 I'm working on the Red Road Flats and the three former flats in Germiston.  I should hopefully start work on the nearby housing streets by mid-March.  I predict that I will finish the site of the Red Road Flats by the end of the month or the start of March.  Here is what I've done so far...

Not bad! How much are you planning to do?
Hawick_1987

I don't play this game myself, but I know of plenty people who do. Looks like a lot of effort has gone into this, well done.

I plan on doing the entire city.  So far I've only done the Red Road estate and two of the three former flats in Germiston.

my boys never off the bloody thing.....if hes not playing then hes watching utube vids of other people playing it haha

so is your world accessible by other users?
smb95

A few minutes ago I have done all the basics that I know of 9 Coll Street, which was demolished back in 1992.  Work started on it last night.  Here is the picture of it:

*Off topic* I have started a petition on Change.org to save the Red Road Flats (whats left of them) from demolition.
Petition link: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petit...-demolition-of-the-red-road-flats
smb95

I have done the foundation of the first house that is not in the main Red Road and Birnie Court sites.  It is one of the two-storey semi-detached houses on Red Road. here is the foundation:

smb95

It's happening now...

I have now started to build the walls of the flats in 33 Petershill Drive.  I predict that I will complete them before the day ends.  However I may choose to delay the final parts of it deliberately since I would like to finish 123 Petershill Drive first, then do the rest.
Alex Glass

Well done smb good work

Can't wait to see the next part
smb95

I've started work on one of the Fountainwell Sighthill flats, whilst still only having done about four houses on Red Road (street).  It's one of the later three (to have been demolished).  Here are some images:

What is the address of this one?

[UPDATE 20/03/2013]: The building mentioned is Fountainwell Terrace
smb95

Progressing to Croftbank/Edgefauld

I have done the official Avonspark Street road (the actual road) and a few house foundations to go with it.  It is probably the fastest progression I have made, in this Minecraft world so far.  At this rate I could possibly start the high-rise flats at Croftbank Street and Edgefauld Road before the month ends.

Avonspark Street:

Less than 10% complete!
smb95

I'm there now, but I skipped some roads

I am now making preparations to start building 15 Croftbank Street.  I would start building right away but I will need to find out the layout of the actual flats inside the building from the fact that when you face directly north the building is diagonal, therefore proving a challenge.
smb95

Return to Sighthill

Work has now started on Crawfurd Hights (31+33 Pinkston Drive).  Apparently this has inadvertently resulted in me thinking of a song name "Return to Sighthill" from inspiration from two songs, and I'm not even someone who will ever do music.  Originally I was trying to find a way to quickly get to the flats on Rosemount Street, but I ended up trying to do more of Sighthill instead.
31+33 Pinkston Drive:

smb95

Floor 19 of 80 Charles Street has been done (floors only).  About to do what might be the 20th floor, the glass area above the 19th floor.
me

i too are pretty sh!t at tech drawing but heres 250 edgefauld and 15 croftbank

(baws.....meant to put that in the minecraft thread....can a mod move please)
smb95

The main structure (exterior walls, floors, stairs and interior walls have now all been done on 15 Croftbank Street and to be honest, I only started work on it several hours ago.  Later I will add the windows and the rest of the doors and signs (all interior).
smb95

Sighthill.  I'm now actually going somewhere with this project.  Results aren't too bad.  Here it is.

I shall return tomorrow.
smb95

And now...

It's that other Pinkston block, Crawfurd Hights has already been done (not completely).

Glenavon Road

Post whatever information about the Glenavon Road Flats in Maryhill here.

And now

Question of mine: Why were these flats condemned for demolition while they were under GHA ownership (before the Maryhill HA took ownership and saved them from that fate)?

Moderator Edit

Moved into Minecraft

Alex Glass

When the GHA was established in March 2003 they had over 80,000 houses which were transferred from the Council.

There were a substancial number of houses that here vacant and potentially unletable. A demolition programme was drawn up for the worst areas where there were more vacant properties than those rented out. In order to avoid the mistakes of the past - investing in poor stock in rder to try and bring it back int use only to discover no one wanted to live in the are even if it had millions of pounds invested.

As well as a demolition programme there was a housing furtures programme which included many areas that were struggling. Areas in the Housing Futures programme didn't receive refurbishment until there were clear plans to ensure that the investment made would last the 30 years of the loan agreement. There may have been areas that were programmed for demolition that it was felt could work if the stock numbers were reduced. There may also have been other factors taken into consideration. Through time it was decided that there would need to be substantial clearances in large parts of the city and new plans brought forward which involved transforming large areas that where failing. These became Transformational Regeneration Areas.

At the same time there was pressure on the GHA to transfer the stock to other housing associations. These Housing Associations had already entered into a management agreement to only manage the stock in their area. By transferring these houses the decision of the stocks furture in these areas rightly was transferred to those housing associations.

The GHA now has just over 41,000 houses. Much of the demolition programme has now been completed. There may still be some that are already programmed but not completed. All those Housing Associations who wished to take over the ownership and full responsibility of the houses they previously managed now have the decisions about their future.

There will be many positive as well as negative stories across all the communities that make up Glasgow. I remember hearing lots of people complaining about the conditions of the houses in the Gorbals Hutchie E and rejoycing when the Council decided to demolish them. When the demolition started there were two women interviewed on the TV who were almost in tears at the lose of their homes. They didn't want to leave the area. Sadly the combination of poor design and the decisions of people choosing to move to other areas out of the Gorbals played a part in the decision taken to clear it then and transform it into an area where people did want to live.

Sometimes it is necessary for decisions to be taken that not everyone agrees with and only time will tell if it was the right decision.

Fully comprehensive reply Alex that should clear up a lot of queries in a single post

I remember the STV interview with the bubbling people when they took down the Elizabeth block but i also knew people who were glad to see the back of it.
Genuine Fondness
Genuine Disdain
or Genuine Rose Coloured Nostalgia.

I have many great memories of living in Whitevale Street I will be glad to see them demolished but i will also be a little sad as its another part of something thats always been there and indeed is part of me that is gone.

Had a wander round Barrowfield a few months back only one original block remains still not sure why as its mostly like a modern day ruin and it's certainly not the Barrowfield I knew. Progress has been made in improving peoples living conditions but i bet theres a few old punters in the nice new Back n Font doors still missing the dark damp closes filled with druggies and glue sniffers.
Alex Glass

I have said it before.

I grew up in Cowcaddens during the slum clearances in the mid 1960's. Like most of the families around us we were desperate to get out and move to a much larger house out in the countryside (Ruchazie). As kids we could roam about and had loads of places to play that didn't result in us trying to avoid the rats. I have many very fond memories of growing up in Cowcaddes but have many more of Ruchazie. Sadly most of the house in Ruchazie have: now been demolished. There are many reasons why this has happened but the common thread throughout all slum clearances from the Victorian period right through to now.

Very funny Cybers

Funnily enough the same thing has happened to everywhere I have worked almost. Oh dear it doesn't look like the City Chambers has much of a future.

Och well its no the same without yi there anyhow
smb95

It's official.  I have started work on Dykemuir Street.

And now to bed since I'm tired.
smb95

I am possibly going to consider putting up the world on to a online server sometime soon.  It's not definite but it may happen.  I may first build Barmulloch, more of Balornock and try going into the main Springburn area (not the entire G21 postcode area or the whole of Springburn (maybe)).
smb95

123 Petershill Drive Completed

123 Petershill Drive has just been completed.  The ground level has only one more thing on the inside to add, everything else is just about complete, with all the walls, doors, windows and signs, it is ready to go.  63 and 93 Petershill Drive are also currently going through the same completion work, then 33 Petershill Drive and 21 Birnie Court afterwards.  This means that 123 Petershill Drive is the first building to be finished out of all of them, as well as being the first to be built.

That looks like a lot of hard work..
smb95

Just completed 93 Petershill Drive, apart from the concierge station and the supposed water storage.

And now I better go to bed.
smb95

Forgot to say that I've also completed 33 (well okay, not the ground-level reception area) and 63 Petershill Drive, thats half of the high-rise buildings complete at Red Road.
smb95

I cannot believe that I hadn't mentioned the completion of 21 Birnie Court yesterday.  Was thinking of leaving it for a little while longer, but since it was a week after the building came down in reality I chose to just complete it.  All I need to do now is do 10 Red Road Court now and then that's all the "point" blocks done, which is three quarters of all the high-rises.  It will be a while before I can get the full layout of the "slab" blocks.
smb95

Just finished 15 Croftbank Street.

And next I shall do 250 Edgefauld Road.

(Please note that the foundation isn't complete)
me

is there no way to copy croftbank and paste it to the 250 site?

both building are identical and would save you loads of time
smb95

This post of mine is absolutely unnecessary

me wrote:

There is.  MCEdit is a program that I have that can do that thing, I used it to add ultra-massive chunks (not the literal Minecraft type of chunk) of soil (called dirt in-game) that would have taken me forever to have done in the actual game.  I even used it to move 33 Petershill Drive in to correct position, after realizing that I had placed it at the same location that I did in the XBOX 360, misplaced.  However I wouldn't use it to copy a whole building to be used as a different building, I prefer to build a identical building from scratch, since some people, even myself, think that just copying everything using a program for other stuff is a little too lazy.  Besides it only took me a few hours to do the general building of 15 Croftbank Street (walls, floors, stairs and where the lifts would be), which would mean that it would take around the same time to build 250 Edgefauld Road and the twins at Balgrayhill.  Building a building from scratch that is virtually the same as a nearby building also made from scratch doesn't take too much time.

It is a download link for 123 Petershill Drive.  It is now available to download (albeit, as a MCedit schematic).
smb95

First Birnie Court Walk-up flats completed. 18 Birnie Court

And I'm still doing the other seven.  It's quite a shame that these little grey concrete blocks weren't well known compared to the eight high-rises.  These little blocks looked quite beautiful as-well.  If only people knew more about these little things.

Nope, don`t see the point of this, its like `Second Life` with zero life. :;

Ah "Second Life" I mind one day the papers were full of Second Life Millionaires... Wonder where they are now with their dummy money ?
smb95

Thought I'd say this. I have been doing quite an amount on the Fountainwell part of Sighthill, which now has six buildings (in-game(including highly unfinished)). I have also done a few floors on 16+18 Pinkston Drive. I'll probably finish it (general buildings and landscape) within the next few weeks.

I won't be posting anything here until I start covering bigger areas within a shorter time so that it would be more interesting rather then having me post little updates. Currently working on Balgrayhill Road.

Not yet. Might be a while before it happens.

Thought I'd put these up:

I'm currently working on the internals of 40 Rosemount Street, building the nearby Tesco and building two towerblocks up at Balgrayhill Rd. I've also done quite an area of Barmulloch. I'm now working on some more of the city quicker but still not what I'd consider enough for updates every two weeks.

I think these tenements are on Edgefauld Road

Time for Old Dalmarnock!

It begins with 131 Allan Street (pictured).
smb95

I have just started going to the Dennistoun area of Glasgow in this. The first building I've done that I assume is in the area is the Seat Hyundai Arnold Clark by the M8.

I also now have managed to get and use Minecraft 1.7, therefore can use Stained glass (vital thing) and Red sand (also kinda vital) plus the higher max render distance. Before then St Enoch and Central Station would've been hard to build normally and you wouldn't be able to see Rosemount Street in the above picture.
Hawick_1987

I know very little about Minecraft (although my partner's sister is in love with it), but that is some cracking work - well done!
smb95

A few days, a few buildings, Dennistoun has already taken a bit of shape.

Craigpark (Street)

Golfhill Drive

End of Golfhill Drive

Armadale Street/Whitevale Street (largely unfinished)

And for one of the two tallest buildings in Glasgow:
109 Bluevale!

So far this is probably the fastest I've worked in Minecraft. Usually I'd take a while doing little things, usually not doing a new building so often. This may or may not mark the start of me working at a faster rate. More to come soon.

[EDIT]Oh, and not to forget...
131 Allan Street

I finished this a few weeks ago.
smb95

It has been 1 year (and eight days almost) since I started this project. It, when completed (which will most likely be in a few years!) will be one of the biggest (or even THE biggest) Minecraft projects ever. I, so far have covered the areas of Balornock, Springburn, the City Centre, The Gorbals, and Dennistoun. But strangely I've, so far only started work on 172 buildings, which I believe is pretty poor for a city project. The file size of the world is currently 222MB. Some may think that it started at George Square (someone I know probably first thought that), others might think some other City Centre landmark, but instead I started somewhere more important to me and built my first home (123 Petershill Drive) first instead. and I then went on to the other seven towerblocks there. I then started to expand away from there. I find it hard to believe it's already been a year since I started this. Here are some pictures of a few places I've done.

123 Petershill Drive

Barmulloch Tenement

Petershill Road Victorian Tenements

Fountainwell

Lenzie Terrace

I'll post some more pictures in the next few days just to keep the picture count per post acceptable.
In the meantime here's the St Enoch Mall. I started work on it on January 2nd this year. Will take me a while for me to figure out the layout of the place and do the entire roof.

Seeing as it's been a year since I started this what do you think I should do that I've not already done?

Now that just made me heehaw
Alex Glass

Firstly I don't understand the question. Second, if it is your project surely you have an idea in which direction you want to go.

If you have already ignored what others think then maybe you should keep going in your own direction and make it a personal reflection on what areas of the city are important to you.
Marblez

That will be a full scale recreation of the Bruce Plan and a multi-storey utopia then .....
smb95

I have just completed the 100th building (even though there are now 191 buildings in the Minecraft world), 198 Balgrayhill Road.

And here's some more:
Norfolk Court

Wyndford

Possilpark

Does anyone have a layout of the Cranhill flats? As they're also being built at the moment.
smb95

Gonna be building the last two Fountainwell blocks soon. After that I'll only have to finish the shops, the four storey walk up flats and along the other school there.

I have also been working on Possilpark and Wyndford recently.

The two white & cream blocks here are the 15-storey blocks at Wyndford. It shows what they may look like once refurbished.

And now for the Still Game block

I've started building it. It'll probably be finished later today.

June 2014 update

I've now started working on the Townhead Flats. I'll be trying to work a bit better to try covering more of the city quicker and doing curved buildings and more detailed hills.

For most of the time the only street I really did within Balornock with houses outwith Red Road was Avonspark Street, and only one side of houses on that street. I'm now focusing to do more of Balornock up the hill, try and go somewhere with it.

Oatfield St/Dykemuir St/Red Rd/Burnbrae St

I've also been working round the Anderston/Finneston areas in the city centre. Notable buildings include:

The Hilton

14 Shaftesbury Street

Blytheswood Court

And I'll be finishing the towerblocks at Sighthill, along with schools and that. The buildings will be moved a bit before moving on to final landscaping to ultimately finish the built up parts of Sighthill.
