Glasgow in the 1960s, 70s & 80s

Hello!

Let me start this off by saying how outstanding it is to see what Glasgow was like before my time.  Truly amazing.  Itís great to have an idea of what peoples lives were like and they way folk lived as apposed to nowadays - my generation.  I would like to thank every one of the posters on this who have submitted endless amounts of pictures; it has really opened my eyes to life in old Glasgow.

A question I do have which I hope can be answered by all of the posters of pictures; is, I am currently involved in a project where we are looking to incorporate several of the pictures posted on here in an e-presentation; and was looking to see if I would be OK to use the photographs as, again, they are absolutely spot on for the project I am working with and hope no-one would have a problem with it.  I can confirm that the project I am involved in is based in Glasgow and would not be used for making money or anything untoward - just a project to let the people of Glasgow; not privy to this outstanding forum, see some old pictures of Glasgow to reminisce and compare these images to what we have now.

I do hope as a fellow Glaswegian my request will be OK and can proceed with illustrating to the people of Glasgow, and perhaps others further a field, so that they can enjoy them as much as I have.

Many thanks indeed!
Stuball

I suggest contacting the individual person that posted the pictures you wish to use. Some photos may not be usable depending on original source. Not everyone will see a thread like this posted and a private message would bring their attention better.
Would you be willing to credit the forum in some way?
truckmeister

Thanks very much Stuball for your prompt response and many thanks for your welcome to the forum.  Thatís what Iíll do - I will get in touch with those who have posted individually and seek permission.  When you ask; would you be willing to credit the forum in some way, what do you mean exactly?

Cheers.
cybers

He means exactly what he said and your understanding of it makes me dubious to your overall intentions.

The forum was where you came across the images it is down to the individual if they allow permission for use off site but would probably also stipulate
"CREDIT"
I.E original creator of image.

Forum Credit could be something like
"As Seen on WWW.Urbanglasgow.co.uk

I know that most likely the majority will disagree with me but if I take or have photos and put them online - I do so for the 'commonweal' and as such expect my photos to be used.  If someone tries to claim them as their own - well I have the original on digital media to disprove their claims.  I don't really fret about being credited or holding copyright...

If I don't want someone to use my pics, I don't post...

Anyone else feel the same way or am I in the minority?
cybers

I would say the minority but this is strictly from a personal point of view.
Wait till newspapers or magazines "Steal" one of your images see if you feel different about profit organisations lifting one of your images in the name of lazy journalism. I choose to share certain images with the "Forum" and forum members i do not expect to see them turn up on other sites claimed as other peoples or otherwise without express permission.

I have been looking back on my E-mails and found 13 requests for photographs,  on each occasion I asked for a copy of the postcard, book, leaflet ect. The only one that responded was the Citizens theatre the rest promised but never delivered as Cybers said it's lazy and cheap form of journalism.

Hah, yeah... I've lost count of those promises broken. The only one that followed through was a channel4 production company that told me when my picture will appear on TV
Beano

Stu...unless your prepared to put a watermark through the middle of your photographs they will just take it anyway knowing the chance is you will never see "their" work.

Nobody has ever asked for any of my pics.....

Fully agree with you Cybers, buddy; that it's not rocket science.  However, considering that this is the first time I have ever ventured into the forum world; it was a question which wasn't very clear. If he had said something like: "would you be willing to promote the forum i.e. (as you have very kindly highlighted above) "As seen on www.urbanglasgow.co.uk when using the pictures in your project?" - from a forum novice's point of view, would have been much easier and furthermore clearer to understand which I am sure you willl agree?  However, never the less - I have since contacted the individual poster and have been given permission by him to use the pictures that I need and just to clarify - Yes, I will be crediting the forum in the project, happily!

Oh, and thanks very much Cybers for your kind welcome!

Cheers!

Glad you managed to get what you were looking for. I am grateful for you taking the time to ask the individual there are too many fly by night charlatans who lift stuff from here and post it somewhere else.

Sometimes just the asking is enough to get what's required if its for non-commercial projects though there is a site that is run like a business that operates in murky waters around these parts ...

Hey Cybers!

Yeah - really happy that, through this site, I am able to highlight to the people of Glasgow; and even better - people from other countries believe it or not - just how Glasgow over the decades has changed and been transformed for the better. It was a pleasure to ask for permission as it not only builds common relationships but get to interact with people of Glasgow who share a passion for the same thing.  I firmly agree that it is only fair to ask and in the words of Jerry MaGuire; "...that there is such a thing as manners..." There are too many free loaders out there who do not have such a attribute.

However; FYI - very shortly I will be uploading certain pictures looking at regeneration in Glasgow which you, and many others on here may find interesting - watch this space!

Thanks again Cybers!

I have never refused anybody a copy of my photos, apart from one crowd on Facebook who thought  it was Ok to nick my photos and then verbally abuse me when I asked Facebook to remove them
I had asked for credit and if I had got that, I would have been happy

We might never see if our photos have been copied? well maybe I was lucky but a member of Glescapals tipped me off about the Facebook ones and I have found other sites with my photos, luckily they agreed to credit the photos to me
I wish I had watermarked all of them but its too late now

Most of you know you only need to ask me, I have have had plenty of photos from this web site
Vinny the Mackem

Theres a new Facebook group which may be focussed upon a certain part of the north of Glasgow which may contain the name of a female and a hill (!!) where I have spotted quite a few photographs that only seem to be on here.

There's one picture in particular of St George's Road/Round Toll where a respondent has asked more about the picture.  I posted a reply that the history of the photograph was contained on the website where it first appeared, ie here.  The group admnistrator didn't seem to happy and justified it by saying the photo was just picked up from google.  This, despite the very obvious fact, that google, when displaying the photo, also give you the URL of the site upon which it appears!

Idiots on Facebook (no changes there) - credit is due to people for the effort they make in travelling, setting-up and taking the photos. It is all too easy to just click a mouse a few times and 'lift' one from Google.

Hi Vinnythemakem, well spotted, bet you its one of Strepadairs photos
Vinny the Mackem

Stu - PM'd

Norrie - Yeah some of Streap's but the one that caught my attention was one posted by Purplethistle.  Colour photo of St George's Road at the Round Toll (just round the corner from where I live, so it stuck in my tiny brain!).

I re-read the original post here.  He got them from an old guy who was giving them away, so it's most certainly not a picture that's kicking about everywhere on the internet!
norrie

Hi Vinny the makem, its agrrevating, if only they would ask, they shall receive
I have just spoked to a lady from Rutherglen, who is looking for Rutherglen photos, I am meeting her on Friday to give all the photos I have taken

norrie

If they are, I'll buy a copy
Vinny the Mackem

It wasn't the fact that the particular picture was posted up without credit, it was the blatant "bugger off" I got when I commented on it!
norrie

Hi vinny the makem, do as I had to do, contact Facebook, or perhaps Stuball is attending to that
dickyhart

I got a photo stolen by the Guardian a few years back for a special insert they done about Glasgow. It was a pic of Tunnocks bakery. They denied it until i produced the original, the give away was the clock on the front of the building. ended up getting £70 off them.
cybers

The Guardian and the Evening times are the worst offenders i have ever come across in the name of Lazy Journalism... Both are treated equally with contempt and now BBC and STV are getting in on the act with Flickr accounts and buried amongst the group rules is the clause...

All images submitted to the group shall be allowed unrestricted use via related companies and third parties deemed appropriate by us ... Free stuff for the commercial sector anyone submitting photos to their weekly galleries seriously needs their heads looked.
norrie

Hi Dickyheart, good for you
gleegie

Has anyone ever seen a street level pic of the St Enoch Hotel from North Drive (not St Enoch Square)? You can just make it out on the left of Strapadair's shot here...

It snaked the length of St Enoch Station up to Stockwell Street and would have made for an impressive canyon at the back of Debenhams. Did anyone commit it to film prior to the bulldozers? Image posted by Glasgowken.
cybers

norrie

Hi Cybers that was a smashing clip, is it yours?
cybers

No its what i do when everyone else has gone to bed... Surf crap watch bad movies and every now and again a little nugget of pure gold surfaces.

Had to ask nice to get the embed code for it
norrie

Hi Cybers, well it was worth staying up late for
Did you clock the guy wearing the Dan Dares

No picture I'm afraid - but I remember walking along it as a small boy. And you're absolutely right, a 'canyon' would best describe it because of how dark it was due to the tall buildings on either side. If memory serves me correctly a lot of the services for the hotel went in and out of various doors, I seem to remember lots of big basket hampers on wheels being loaded into the backs of trucks, probably washing.

It was alive with people coming and going into the building, men having a swift fag, deliveries being unloaded and lots and lots of noise with staff  shouting to each other over the others.

Thanks Fireman, good to see the memories are still there at least.

St Enoch really would make a better northern terminus of HSR than High Street, by 2033 (or whenever the Glasgow leg gets going) the mall ought be up for demolition anyway.
norrie

Hi Gleegie, I am sure the buses to Renfrew ran from that st, I remember getting one in the late 60s

The facebook page you mention is still stealing pictures from here.
When I asked the woman owner why she was using other peoples pictures she told me there was no information on the pictures about the owner. When I posted a link to the pictures on the actual photographers websites she went ballistic and all her wee pals started on at me for picking on her! I pointed out to her on her page that she shouldn't be passing off other people's work as her own but she just blocked me from commenting on her page and she removed my comments about her being a thieving toerag.
