Glasgow in the 1970s – a supplement

Scenes from the Cutting-room Floor, or, Scraping the Barrel.

So, I've put together a couple of hundred shots which for one reason or another didn't make it into any of the threads so far. Some have only recently come to light; many had been rejected on grounds of gross technical deficiency or lack of historical interest (not that I'd ever set the bar very high on these counts), others because they were near-duplicates of shots that did make it. Don't expect to find any gems. The standard in general is pretty low, and I apologise in advance for any time you may come to feel you have wasted on them. Just blame Norrie – he tells me that any old photo of Glasgow is worth looking at.

Altogether there's quite a bit more material than I had envisaged, and rather than chucking it all into a ragbag,  much of it of minimal interest to most, I've arranged it for convenience into sets, with a separate page for each :-

1    the River
2    the City
3    (sub-set St Vincent St. Church)
4    the Cathedral and environs
5    Townhead
6    East
7    West
8    Govan
9    Southside
10  Queen's Park
11  other parks
12  odd & ends

The River

I think the tenements on the right are part of St Vincent Crescent, so these dockside cranes would have been at the Queen's Dock. The name on the ship is Panamante. Taken on a sail down the river in the early 60s.

Atrocious image quality which I hesitate to include even here. I'm fairly certain that it's the King George V Dock. Same trip.
streapadair

Was this where the Govan Ferry crossed to? Fairfield's on the left and part of the Meadowside Granary on the right. This focussing on the foreground to the detriment of the wider view wasn't me trying to be arty, one of the lenses of my cheap Russian 35mm had taken a knock and (unknown to me till the film was developed) wasn't focussing properly. There's more evidence of this later on. June 1975

Finnieston Ferry, south to north. Part of the negative is missing. June 1975

The Harbour Tunnel, approaching the north rotunda I think. Don't know why this didn't make the cut, it's better than most, must have overlooked it. August 1975

Argyle St. at St Enoch Sq . Think I've posted this one before but can't remember where, so here it is again. Wiki gives 1967-79 as the era of the platform sole, and this was the summer of '75 (as were the next three).

These two misunderstood my intention.

Buchanan St., a fairly random shot taken with a long lens, not a great idea.

Blackadder Aisle.

This is ye ile of Car Fergus. For anyone who doesn't know the legend, it is that St Fergus on his deathbed instructed Kentigern to place his body on an cart drawn by two wild oxen, and where the oxen stopped he was to build a church. They stopped here.

This is a small section of an very poor negative. I offer it as an Impressionist (Pointilliste maybe?)-style view from McAslin St down Glebe St to the Royal.  March 1973

East of the Cross

Gallowgate, very similar to one already posted.  April 1973

Binnie Place. The gateposts are still there, as are the station building and the tenement at the corner of Green St. and London Rd, but not much else. The gable end with the 4 windows may have belonged to Green St. Industrial School. c1970
streapadair

The last two shots of the Calton buddies. For anyone who missed the remarkable identification on the East discussion thread, their names are (l-r) Tony Drummond, John Hill and Bertie Alphonsus Clark (aka the Gallagate Yankee). The gent in the houndstooth tweed coat in the second shot hasn't been identified yet.  March 1976

streapadair

East Campbell St.  September 1973

Hunter St. c1965 (taken by my brother). Think I've posted this already in one of Norrie's threads. Surprisingly little has changed, even the vast wall sign is very similar though with a different name, but some Drygate tenements can be seen.
streapadair

Burrell's Lane from Duke St. Little has changed, except for the building on the far side of Castle St. which was some living accommodation attached to the Pumping Station.  April 1973

Brook St., St Clement's. December 1975

St Luke's in Well St. December 1975. Now spruced up and in Bain Square.

This photo needed a little research, for although I had a rough date (late April or May 1975) I had no note or recollection of where or why I took it. School on the hill, couldn't find a match, but then I noticed the motorway-style lighting and barriers top left, so which m/way was nearing completion at that time? Answer was Phase 1 of the Monkland M8, Townhead to Cumbernauld Rd. Things began to fall into place, and the school was identifiable as the old Riddrie Primary (where there is now the corral of houses at the top of Leader St.). So, for what it's worth, I present to you the Blochairn-Parkhead off-slip from J13 on the westbound M8.
Incidentally, the tyre tracks coming down from the level part of the hill are I think on the site of the famous Inclined Plane on the Monkland Canal, by means of which barges bringing coal to the city from Lanarkshire could bypass the Blackhill Locks.

West & North

Berkeley St. at Claremont St. The church is still there, home of the RSNO, and there is still a row of 4 storey tenements beyond, but replacements rather than refurbishments. June 1975

Some well known towers, from the Charing Cross area.  January 1977
streapadair

St Georges Rd from the end of Hill St. probably. The Cinema seems to be still in business. February 1978

St Georges Rd, the Metropole. I've already posted a poor version of this, scanned from a tiny print, which Flash1974 waved his magic wand over and vastly improved (thanks). However the original negative has turned up (amazing what you can find when tidying the garage), so this in theory should be better still.  March 1975
streapadair

The house just up St Georges Rd, next to Woodside Library. No idea why I took this one.

Lowest of the Maryhill locks on the F&C. The camera I used here, a Russian roll-film SLR, had developed a light leak which was easily fixed with insulating tape but not before it had spoiled a few shots. However these tenements on Maryhill Rd are long gone so this seems worth posting, just. June 1976

Pollokshaws Rd at Allison St. July 1975

Langside Rd at Queen Mary Ave. This tenement stands directly across Langside Rd from where Alexander Thomson's amazing Queen's Park U.P. Church used to be (destroyed by a German incendiary bomb in 1942), and although it doesn't seem to be listed in any register of his work there are some obvious Thomsonesque details. July 1975

streapadair

Albert Rd at Langside Rd. This was my home territory for more years than I care to count. October 1973

Calder St. at Cathcart Rd, Candlish Memorial Church. I've posted this one already, but here's a better scan of it. July 1975
streapadair

Govanhill Church, which stood (though not for much longer) at the corner of Cathcart Rd and Allison St.
I've posted 2 of these 3 photos before, but they had been scanned from prints. Having found the original negatives, I've scanned them again and the quality should be better.  March1975

streapadair

Queen's Dr., with Queen's Park High. This was my mother's church, and it's probably a mercy she didn't live to see it converted into luxury flats by Quality Street. December 1975

This image is of such dismal quality that I hesitate to post it even here, but it does show a few of the prefabs which lined the south side of Queen's Dr., so has some interest. Of interest too perhaps is the number of spectators watching an age 11-14 BB football match; I think some Scottish League clubs today might be envious.  Early 1960s
