Glasgow's Motorway Network

I found this site the other day ... lots of stuff on roads which were and weren't built ... might be of interest to some of the folks on here

I have what I think should be a quick question, given the knowledge you all seem to have absolutely ut Glasgow.

On the M8 westbound between junctions 16 and 17 to the right hand side, as you drive along it, is the beginning of what I assume is an off ramp or a link to another motorway which was never built. It goes a short distance before meeting a concrete wall. I don't know how many times I've wondered what it was intended for but never got round to asking. Can anyone shed any light on it please?

The New A81 Bypass which never arrived. It would have been a continuation of the filled in canal at Speirs Wharf only they never filled it in.

Both the above answers are correct ... the area you refer to was the westbound off-ramp (blue) which I clearly remember being signposted "Trossachs" when I was young

Other visible signs are the eastbound off-ramp and the westbound on-ramp at Garscube Road (red)... this also explains the large gap between the carriageways at this point

The road was planned to run over the infilled Port Dundas branch of the Forth and Clyde canal from Spiers Wharf (purple) up to Maryhill where it was to connect to another road along the north of the city out towards Great Western Road enroute to Clydebank / Dumbarton etc

Thanks for the replies, satisfied my curiosity!
