Glasgow's Pop Past

Didn't really know where to post this but thought it is part of the past so it is in here.

Looking through my old records I came across some old singes from Glasgow's bands of the early 80's.

What do you have in your collection with a Glasgow connection?
james73

Is that one genuine, Alex? - looks like a poor mans Boy George to me...

For me, the quintessential Glasgow LP cover:

Beat that...

Although admittedly, "A walk across the Rooftops" is a good contender...

Alex have you a copy of HollyWood Dream by H20?
Alex Glass

Thanks Guys.

Deacon Blue and Blue Nile beats me. Strawberry Switchblade aswell.

Sorry INH I don't have Hollywood Dream.

Now I need to find m Henry Gorman single with poster.
Alex Glass

Found some more I hope you will be interested in.

I was at the gig when this was being recorded. This single is unusual in that the B side has no label

Brilliant Alex!!

I would be really interested in knowing where the Midge Ure photo was taken? It may be the Old Ath on Buchanan St but it's been years since I've been in there so I can't be sure. Anyone?
Alex Glass

Not sure Cheezy but Gary or Gordon would be able to tell us.

Haven't seen Gary about here lately. I may post a couple over there to see what reaction they get. Unless someone else here can provide the answer.
cheesylion

Just looked again at the Midge Ure pic and it's most definately NOT where I thought it might be, I don't even know why I thought that, it looks nothing like it! I'm a tube!

It looks to me like a stage in a theatre, which means it could be anywhere.

Looks like the Pavilion to me.

No, googled photos of the Pavillion, Atheneum, Covent Garden Opera, Vienna Opera etc. Nothing matches.
Hugo Drax

It is obviously Rutherglen Town Hall before the refurbishment.

Can I be the first to say that I was at school with B A Robertson's cousin?

Yes you can

Can I be the first to say I once spilled beer over Justin Currie (he of Del Amitri fame) in the Curlers when quite pished?

This was many years ago when their first album was out and you'd have still been a little bitty kitten then.

Caledonia Dreamin'

Set your recorders music lovers.

BBC 2 9.00pm Sunday 27th April - Caledonia Dreamin'
Hugo Drax

I once got drunk on champagne with Billy Mackenzie. Happy days.
Alex Glass

Finally found my Henry Gorman Band (HGB) single.

Made by Backshop Records. The band I was with recorded in the Backshop Studio in Pollokshield where this record was recorded.

I've just missed half of this, ironicially cos I was listening to some Del Amitri and
Hue & Cry...

Alex Glass

I missed a couple of minutes at the start and had to jump up to record it.
Hugo Drax

Hah same here. I missed the first half as I was listening to Edwyn Collins.

I also forgot all about this but the Beeb are generally pretty good with replaying stuff on their active website. Unfortunatly Scottish stuff is often overlooked including this, but the article below made for some interesting reading

Thanks for the link Cybers.

If anyone wants a copy with a couple of minutes missing from the start let me know.
james73

From what I saw of it, that's basically the show in text format.

Kelvingrove Bandstand, 1971. I think this was the second "Free Festival" held in Kelvingrove, and I only have the haziest memories of being at the first one in September (I think) 1970, as a wide-eyed 15-year old. This band were called Stallion, but I remember the likes of Northwind, Up, and Eric Cuthbertson playing. This was before Radio Clyde got involved with these events.

Sorry about the quality of this photo, but I couldn't find my original strip of negatives for this, which I'm sure contained another couple of photos of the gig.

Alex Glass

Wow Neil great photo

Some amount of equipment on stage.

I didn't know it started before Radio Clyde got involved
neilmc

Thanks Alex, just wish I could find the original negs.

I seem to remember the bands just 'pooled' their gear, so you can imagine the wall of sound created.

I can't remember exactly when Radio Clyde got involved; around the mid-seventies, I think.

.....and while we are on the subject of 1971, here's Harmony Row, Jack Bruce's second solo album, released that year.

The sleevenotes for this album says that Harmony Row was around the corner from a stretch of tenements that was a mile long. The debate continues.....

Alex Glass

How good was Jack's album? As a fan of Cream I went down the Clapton route. Jack was never as accessable and I should try and get into his solo stuff.

Harmony Row wasn't as 'commercial' as his first album Songs For A Tailor, and that wasn't exactly commercial!

I only ever bought those first two solo albums.

I'm afraid I was never a fan of Clapton, although I almost bought Layla (the single) out of Bruce's Records at the time of its release.
Alex Glass

CLAPTON IS GOD

Reading his book at the moment. Having first read he ex wife's book (Patti Boyd nee Harrison nee Clapton).

I have seen Clapton in concert 4 times and he is GOD

The Derek and the Dominos album is fantastic would recommend it as a good place to start if you haven't really go into Clapton.

I do prefare his earlier 60's and 70's stuff but the last time I saw him in concert was two years ago and he hasn't lost any of that magic.

Will try and give Jack a spin if I can get any of his stuff in Fopp.
Synchro

Remember this ran all day in various locations throughout the city including George Square & Glasgow Green.

Off the top of my head I remember the following acts playing: Hothouse Flowers, Hue & Cry, Big Country, Deacon Blue, Slide, Kevin McDermott Orchestra, Wet Wet Wet, Sharleen Spiteri and, er... Sheena Easton (who was roundly bottled off stage)

Anybody else at this or have any more info on it?
Alex Glass

Hi Synchro

Someone I know had a video of this which was shown on Channel 4. The tape quality was poor and he gave it to me to copy for him. I managed to get it onto 2 DVDs. It isn't great quality but watchable.

Most people I speak with remember the event but I haven't come over any other details about it as yet.
LowLight

My missus was at that. I would only have been 8 so maybe a bit young for it. She enjoyed it.
