Relocation and Demolition

My grandfather grew up in the Gorbals before moving to Canada, where my family lives now. Lately I've been reading about the area, and it's just so hard for me to fathom that the city planners/government were able to just demolish an entire community. It seems so sad and unfair. I've been to Glasgow a few times, but never to the Gorbals.

Anyway, sorry if this is a bit random.

Have a good one,

CC

I can think of a few people who are deserving of an internal seat when the blow doon happens...
JohnD

October 3rd is the date for Norfolk court. The one closest to the railway is a different design and its full, demolition crews are coming over from the states to demolish that one.
fastnet

One from the other day.

And i've just noticed it looks like it's on it's way down just now....

Dos anybody know wot time blowdown is at on sunday?
Vinny the Mackem

Danny - I've heard timings from 7am to 12 noon.  If I get anything solid, I'll post it here.  Meantime, a pic from this morning.

Norfolk Court 28 September 2010

cybers

I thought it was a night blast to cause minimal disruption to court and Procurator fiscals
Vinny the Mackem

Quick update, as of 1pm on Tuesday 28th, no time set (so I'm told!)
Vinny the Mackem

Cybers - it's early Sunday morning, so there shouldn't be any disruption to either - unless parts of the building crash into PF's or GSC!
cybers

Oops ... For some reason i read that as Monday...
Vinny the Mackem

My source has advised it's a 10.30 demolition - however, I've also heard elsewhere it's scheduled for 10.00!!!
Vinny the Mackem

Okay, got a hold of the official info from Safedem. No actual time noted for blast, but they say the evacuation will take place between 8.00 and 10.00, so presumably a 10.30 blast might be about right!
Stuball

They will have a time... they just won't tell members of the public
j_trem

Does anyone know who will be evacuated?
cybers

Probably just the other block as Portland st should be out of the danger zone...
j_trem

Hi all,

Seen the blow down today.  My first time seeing one in real life.

When is the remaining block coming down?  I would also like to go inside for a final look before the building is closed off from the rest of the world.

Just go over and stand outside.....You will be inside within a minute if you do.
norrie

Hi SMB95, do you mean Norfolk Court?
They are not due to be demolished till the new houses on the Stirlingfauld site are finished 2014?
growler

I came from Florence street in the Gorbals, then Caledonia road and was lucky enough to stay in 66 Norfolk court, I was there for 9 yrs before buying a house, but once a Gorbals boy always a Gorbals boy..........God's Country.
norrie

Hi Growler when did you leave block 66 ?
I worked as a Concierge on that site from 1994, about 12 years

Hi Growler, I assume you know that blocks 54 and 6 were demoelishd a few years ago, 5 and 17, may well be done in 2015?
growler

I see they have blown up Sandiefield road, not before time a Junkie haven.

Fantastic info there..I thought it was one of the forgotten smaller shops and Id never hear of it again... Strange how it was never in Sauchiehall or one of our main streets with being so exclusive... thanks a lot...I wonder if I could ask another wee favour about the Buffalo Lodge in Abbostford Pl..way back in the mid 60s...My uncle Matt was a Buff and I used to get to all the Xmas parities over there but cant find any photos or info.. be glad of help...
norrie

Good info re Ashe, Strepadair

Calamity funny you should mention the Buffs, one of our walking group came from that area and he mentioned the Buffs hall, also a Masonic Hall but we hit a brick walk re Masonic, somebody came up with a  lodge number but I am sure it was an Orange Order lodge number

I will see if he has a photo
calamity

thanks Norrie... I can still see the old building that looked like a big old house used for the Buffs.. but cant remember the number of Abbotsford Place.
sputnik

calamity,im sure the royal antidiluvian order of the buffallo[buffs] club was in fitzroy place.there is a buffs club in whiteinch in what used to be the stella maris.next to the tunnel.
calamity

As far as I rmember Sputnik it was Abbotsford place , I dont recognise that other address.. but propably another lodge.. I have photos taken inisde the building but not outside.
