Harry Benson - Kelvingrove 30th May - 14th Sept '08This exciting homecoming exhibition includes intimate photographs from the 60-year career of Harry Benson, the internationally renowned photographer from Glasgow.
Harry Benson's career is a roll-call of contemporary history and culture, and some of his images have achieved icon status.
Benson arrived in America with the Beatles in 1964. He has photographed every American president since Dwight D Eisenhower, was just feet from away from Bobby Kennedy when he was assassinated, and was in the room with Richard Nixon when he resigned.
On display are a range of images of world leaders and events; icons of fashion, music and film; and Scottish and American athletes. There are also images from his recent book Harry Benson's Glasgow.
Harry Benson works for many high-profile magazines, including Life, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest and the Sunday Times Magazine.

One for the album!
ONE of Glasgow's most famous sons opened his first major exhibition in his home
city today with the words: "I wish this had happened when I was 17."
Looking up with pride at the enormous banner emblazoned across Kelvingrove
Art Gallery, award-winning photographer Harry Benson spoke of his joy at
bringing his work to the landmark attraction.
Harry Benson - A Photographer's Journey traces his 60-year career, from
touching portraits of celebrities and US presidents to nostalgic snaps of
Gorbals kids.
At the show, John Greig and Billy McNeil sit alongside Jackie Kennedy.
The Manhattan-based photographer, 78, has captured world leaders and
pop legends including the Beatles, but one of his most memorable snaps
was of two kids sitting on the steps of a Gorbals tenement .
The youngsters are on the front of his latest book Harry Benson's Glasgow,
which features many of the pictures from the exhibition.
He said: "It's nice to get recognition in your home city. I just wish it had
happened when I was younger and not an old man.
"I'm a son of Glasgow. The city hasn't changed to me at all. It's become
softer but that's it.
"I would love to get in contact with those children. I remember the day
well. They were just sitting on the step.
I didn't move them - you can't move children. They must be in their 40s now."
Harry worked for a number of Glasgow newspapers as a young photographer
but revealed he had been turned down for a job at the Evening Times when
he was 17.

The Evening Times staff snapper must've been cacking himself after he was told who's photo he was to take that day.

Went round this today - well worth the visit, I've seen many of the pics displayed in books but there's something different about seeing the big and on a wall

Took a trip over this afternoon. It's well worth a visit. There are many fantastic photographs capturing iconic people & places, especially during the fascinating period of the 1960's. There are also many photographs depicting the ordinary folk who grace this planet, be it the US Marines in Somalia or the street urchins in Glasgow. The shots of the Bobby Kennedy assassination are quite moving, particularly the one of the party hat in the pool of blood, they are rather blurred, which given the panic at the time, makes them all the more immediate. For me, some of his best work includes the portraits of Grace Kelly, Judy Garland & Bill & Hilary Clinton. If I had to pick three favourites it would be the photos of Tommy Sheridan & his wife Gayle, the Amy Winehouse portrait (he said that she was most professional & very focused, just goes to show, eh?) & the one of the couple kissing in a cafe in Paris (IIRC) Top of my list has to be the one of the children taken in Kelvingrove Park:
Sadly, with the passage of time, we are now in an age where the taking of that particular photograph would be frowned upon by certain members of the thought police:
