Hydro Arena

Anyone tell me what is it that's being built beside the SECC? Passed yesterday (OK, don't get out much!) and its a hive of building activity...something to do with the forthcoming Commonwealth Games maybe?
fastnet

New concert venue.

Oh WOW! Many thanks! How FAB does that look!!!
Jagz1876

It's the Scottish National Arena, which will be used during the games for athletics and netball.  After the games the 10,000 seat arena will be used for conferences and concerts.

It's actually the other way round with the arena opening in 2013 with 2 months worth of concerts and events. It will be used for Gynmastics and the Netball finals during the commonwealth games.

They are also building a multistory car park between Finniestion street and the Arena (red tower crane)

Construction work at SECC

I went past the SECC in the works van on Tuesday and I was wondering if anyone knows what all the flatbed trailers of concrete section are for that are behind the SECC, on the land between there and the new transport museum. There are loads of them.

I wondered if it was something to do with the new concert venue or adjacent multi storey car park, or is it something else i'm not aware of?

Isn't that where Tesco are building a new store?

I think the new tesco is being built over by the mess that is glasgow harbour. pretty sure the concrete is for the new arena[/u]

Tesco is being built on the waste ground to the west of Glasgow Harbour - and will face onto Castlebank/South Street - location map can be found here I've shown the earmarked land as a red shaded area
Stuball

Over the last 24 hours, they've lifted the centre section of the roof into place and it's been pretty spectacular to see. They'll now fit 16 segments round it, into the concrete supports and remove the centre tower. It's like an alien ship landing just now... hopefully I'll remember to get a picture of it tomorrow.
norrie

Hi Stuball, damn I was only down there the other week and noticed the curved sections on the site, will get back perhaps tomorrow or next week
DavidMcD316

i find the lack of pics disturbing...

Hi earl88, I was at the Hydro today and never noticed the diggers
Stuball, over to you

At the moment, it appears to be ground works, probably just to clear it, probably for surveys. There has been on plans submitted

That's an old one... most of the roof is now in place.

Incidently, the spare land has been made a £4 a day car park... but we're debating wether they have permission for this

The Hydro: Opening of £125m Glasgow venue rescheduled

The operator of an under-construction £125m music venue in Glasgow has pushed back its opening - days after denying reports it was behind schedule.

The 12,000 seat arena, known as The Hydro, had been due to host opera singer Andrea Bocelli on 15 September. He will now perform in November.

Performances of Peter Pan in September have been moved to the SECC - Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

This means Rod Stewart will officially open The Hydro on 30 September.

A statement from the SECC, which will run The Hydro, said: "The original timescale for our opening programme has now changed and as a consequence Andrea Bocelli's performance, scheduled to take place at The Hydro on 15 September 2013, has been rescheduled to Saturday 23 November 2013.

"Peter Pan - The Never Ending Story, scheduled to take place on 27-29 September in The Hydro, has been moved to Hall 4 in the SECC. All tickets will remain valid and will be available in due course.

"We are truly grateful to the artists, management, cast and producers for their co-operation in this matter, and in particular for accommodating the exciting opening programme planned for The Hydro

Ugly bastard of a thing ....

The buildings no bad I meant Rod the fake scotsman   would rather Ladysmith Black Mambazo opened than that wrinkly fuckwit.

While taking a tour around the Hydro last year, I mentioned to the man in charge of the tour and the site, about the job running late, he wasnt too pleased and asked where I got that info, from one of your workers, I said.
luckily for the worker I didn't know his name or his boss would have jumped on him, not that I would have divulged his name but he was spot on
I visit this site every other week and felt that it was not going to open when they said it was

I may be wrong and my memory maybe fuzzy ! But I recall when work first began on the construction that they had banners on the site stating the new arena would be ready spring 2013 !

The cynic in me would like to think its not to cover up the fact it was behind schedule. Though if it means that asshole Rod Stewart does not get to play it WOOHOO !!!
tombro

Does Catnip's picture of 05/12/12 show the start of this fire ?

Tombro
kev

Looking at Nightfly,s great pic I would say that it is probably construction netting that has gone up giving the length of the fire. There is a lot of scaffolding present and the main danger would have been the boards catching fire
Seen this happen once on an oil refinery down south and it was pretty spectacular.
The  other pic shows a guy welding and its not uncommon for material to smoulder if the sparks have came into contact with it and ignite hours later so its essential at the end of shift to do a quick survey of the work area to stop this happening

Cybs...Know your cynic thing was tonuge in cheek No chance anyone would sanction that..end of career, jail, public vilification

My flatmate and I did agree that this was probably one of the few times we can't blame it on "a mysterious fire in an unused building on a site wanted for development".

Ahhh..... but a wee fire to blame for being behind schedule may trigger insurance payments to cover the compensation payments to promoters rather than them having to cover them themselves. Cynical? Me? Surely not ;-)
Catnip

I couldn't possibly comment.

Didn't look like alot of damage. I'm sure it will get sorted as quick as possable.

Are you referring to the Open Day for the press?  I don't think they opened the place for the annual 'Doors Open' day for the public.  I remember the open day for the Clyde Auditorium where it was Access All Areas and I actually bought tickets that day for the Charity Opening night performance of 'Sheihallion'.
Stuball

They did two... one for press/VIPs and one for the public. If you were on the Hydro mailing list, you'd have got the invite

I am - and they didn't! I signed up first day and I've had loads of e-mails for pre-sales, but missed out on that one.  Oh well, I'll get my first chance to see it onThursday at the Peter Gabriel concert.
