This statue stands in Elder Park in Govan. Elder (1824-69) learned his shipbuilding skills under Robert Napier and was a co-founder of what is now the Govan shipyard.
He was an important figure in the history of shipbuilding in Glasgow and his greatest achievement was the development in 1854 of the marine compound steam engine which cut ships` fuel costs by around one third by extracting more energy from the steam by passing it though additional low-pressure cylinders. This technological advance meant dramatic savings on long sea voyages and it led to the yard gaining many orders from shipowners such as the Pacific Steam Navigation Company which operated transcontinental services.

A statue of Sir William Pearce stands opposite the Pearce Institute in Govan. Locally, the statue is called `the Black Man` due to the colour of the tarnished bronze.
Pearce (1833-88) gained shipbuilding experience with Robert Napier and is best known for his stewardship of Fairfield shipbuilders (the Govan shipyard) in the 1870s and 1880s, during which time they built many world-class transatlantic liners. In 1885 he became Member of Parliament for Govan. He is also remembered in the city through his links with Glasgow University`s Pearce Lodge.

By the look of this photos there was a initial position of the King William Statue which is now up near the Cathedral. I am sure HH posted a photo showing the statue in the middle of the road above the station.
This photo shows that the statue was located nearer to the Tontine Building on the north side of Trongate.
Was this the original location?
