Monkton Military Camp

Hi all - I have discovered a couple of old air pictures of a military camp where the Prestwick Holiday Park now sits and was wondering if anyone has any source of information about it.  Canmore suggests that it was some form of training camp for beach landings, and may have been connected with Dundonald (Auchengate) Camp further up the coast

Photographs are here

and here.

There appears to be very little on the ground that would show evidence of the history.

adamton house hotel which is there was once the billets for the raf.

sorry, that should have read usaf not was the yanks that were put there during the war.

Sorry Sputnik, the Adamton House Hotel is over to the east side of the airport on the road to Tarbolton, still in existence.  The Prestwick Holiday Park is build around St Andrews house (which was part of the camp), this is at the west end of the main runway, the holiday park was originally called the St Andrews Holiday Park, but changed its name due to people thinking that the park was in St Andrews, instead of Prestwick

Found some info in a book about the SAS in World War 2.  The camp was home to 2 SAS and also other commando groups joined them there during the preparations for D-Day.  Extensive training was done on beach assault tactics which is reflected in the photograph on RCHAMS of a large landing craft on the beach.
