Urban Glasgow Photo CompetitionAnyone up for a bit of a competition?
In an attempt to brighten up the summer and in time for the 1st anniversary of Urban Glasgow I will put up a suitable prize for the best group of five photos which sum up Urban Glasgow.
You can select any subject already listed within any of the areas of Urban Glasgow. Each image must be different and from different areas/streets of the city.
The photos should be posted here in a group of five giving a short description and a suitable title.
The closing date for entries will be 31st August. An independent judge will select the winner and the prize will be awarded within the first two weeks of September.
Good luck

So does that mean you three will be entering
Do we have a competition then
|
Hugo Drax
|
Yes and yes
|
Alex Glass
|
I will be asking someone I know who is interested in photography to judge the competition. He is a Solicitor who works for the Council. I may also ask the Lord Provost to be a judge
To ensure fairness I will also get someone else who is not part of the Council to be on the judging panel.

Naw
If that is the case I might as well give up now then as I won't have more than 3 minutes available between now and the end of August.
Are we really suggesting that only photographs taken after Fri Jul 25, 2008 10:05 am should qualify?
|

Alex Glass
|
It is for each person to judge for themselves what photos they wish to post.
The only restriction I would suggest is that they must be related to Glasgow other than that it is up to you. Although I would ask that you keep it clean Remember there will be independent judges viewing the photos.
The photos must be originals.
If anyone wishes to submit a photo that has been altered this can be a separate category and there for must be submitted separately and in addition to the five that will form the main competition.
If anyone wishes to make any further suggestions I am willing to be as flexible as possible but it must be reminded that the competition is open to everyone and we can't keep changing things as some people may have already selected their photos.
It has occurred to me that some people may not wish to be the first to submit photos on here. Therefore so that everyone is encouraged to participate I am happy for submissions to be made between a given time. Photos should only be submitted after 6.30pm on 31st August and before 10.00am on the 1st September. Anyone not able to submit their photos at that time can send them to me in a personal message and I will post them up.
Hope this makes sense.

Oh I thought we were going to use the UG Flickr pool for it? No?

Good idea Poodie but maybe not everyone is on Flickr. So use the Flickr Pool if you wish and post to me if you are not on Flickr.
Hope that is ok with everyone.

One of these cat groups uses a strange tag for their entries to the group, one that is unique to a particular competition. Like for example agugcompjul08 - I just made that one up for "Alex Glass Urban Glasgow Competition July 2008". This way, if you put it in as search term for a pool, all entries come up as search result. Not stupid, those cat people, eh?

Screw it, I'll submit something here (while waiting for the police to arrive after a breakin)
What goes up, must come down - Glasgows summer of destruction
This year has seen more of Glasgows buildings coming down and I've been lucky enough to document a few of them.
First this year was Elder Park Church - A small church thats been derelict for years, sandwiched inbetween Tenements blocks. This was purely by chance we spotted this and very lucky to see inside.
The next building, although not currently being demolished but in a poor state of repair is still worth a mention. The former Howdens plant on Scotland St. Part of the building housed the original Undergrounds pulley system that moved the cars before electrification.
The next two shots are of this years multistory demolitions. Firstly, the 2.30am Sighthill demolition, taking down two of the Fountainwell towers adjacent to the railway line and secondly the two Shawbridge towers.
And finally.... destruction of a slightly different style
Swamp Thing, the monster truck destroys some cares during The Glasgow Show on Glasgow Green

It is ok to post them here James.
I will sort it from there.
If there is any problem I will ask people to post them on the Flickr section. Although if anyone wants to post them there that is ok too.

Glasgow Comedy Show locations
The theme of these pictures is to show the locations used for 3 different BBC
Scotland comedy shows, all based in Glasgow.
'City Lights' the often forgotten show about bored bank clerk Willie Melvin. The
show featured some horrendous overacting by main star Gerald Kelly and a good
turn by Andy Gray as his mate Chancer. Willies flat was in the Merchant City before
such a thing as Merchant City ever existed...
'Still Game' features the adventures of Jack, Victor and their mates as they try to
get by on a meagre pension, avoid the local neds and rip the piss out of Boaby the
barman. The boys live in Craiglang, a fictional Glasgow scheme which draws its
real life locations from various parts of the city.
'Rab C Nesbitt' ran for 8 series and, IMO, was one of the best comedy shows ever
made in Scotland, despite it tailing off a bit in later series. Rab was based in Govan
though the locations of the buildings used in the series varied wildly and were
hardly ever actually *in* Govan.
With the exception of the first series of Rab C Nesbitt, all the interior shots used
in these shows were filmed in studios.
City Lights
Willie Melvin's city centre flat.
Still Game
Jack & Victor's towerblock "Osprey Heights" in Craiglang.
Navid's local shop in Craiglang.
Rab C Nesbitt
Rab's house in "Restitution Street" in Govan. The building has been overclad since the last series was made in 1999. Rab's flat was the one on the top right.
Rab's local pub 'The Two Ways' in Govan. Complete with some authentic jaikies...

As usual, I'm thoroughly enjoying pictures of Modern Glasgow from afar.
The judges certainly will have their work cut out in choosing a winner but I reckon the 'Deep And Crisp And Even' photograph is worthy of serious consideration, if only because; in a world where photography experts can use various programmes to 'fudge' their results; this picture reminds me so much of the Glasgow I left in 1960 !
Good luck to all !

Now that the time has passed THANKS to everyone for participating.
Can I just confirm that on here 7 people have submitted the group of 5 photos - Stu, James, LowLight, AlanM, Hugo, Chief Inspector and Hollowhorn.
Cybers are you submitting the two photos on here and three on the Urban Glasgow Flickr area?
If anyone has submitted photos to the Flickr area and you confirm which ones should be considered.
Well done to everyone who has submitted photos and good luck.
I will now had over to the judges and inform everyone on here of the outcome as soon as possible.

To ensure fairness I have asked a broad range of people to carryout the judging.
I will play no part in the judging of the photos other than gathering the information from this totally independent group of people I know. Two are photographers (one professional and one amateur) and the others work in the communications field.
Due to the independence of the judges I have to wait for them each to view the photos.
I should point out that to ensure the integrity of the quality of your photos I have asked everyone to view them on the site rather than have them downloaded and copied.
