Past & Present Pictures Vol.2

Time for a fresh one

Vol.1 - http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/about28.html
Alex Glass

This is a great idea Fjord.

It will help find photos and make life easier later.

smckenzie

I've been scouting out some of my favourite places and just sourcing  the pics. Looking forward to seeing everybody's pics.
Fjord

That's the method behind the madness and hopefully it should make browsing a less taxing experience
cybers

Perhaps a wee live link back to the original thread on the first entry of this new thread would be a step in the right direction.

Fantastic idea all the same ...

- The cobbled street was actually still here until a few
years ago when the car showroom on the left was built.

Glebe Street, 1976 - The tenements have been reduced to the ground floor
shops and pubs. Compare this image to the second Past picture above - this is the
same row of tenements but it is looking from the opposite direction.

Castle Street, c.1960
- I suspect this date is incorrect as the American car was
owned by the guy who ran the cafe and I recall both him and the car from the early
1980s before the buildings were reduced to rubble for the eastern flank of the M8
Ring Road...

Also, you can see the remains of the Church that once stood next to the cafe to
the left. The single storey brick building was a little shop that sold lots of things
and was run by some bad-tempered wummin...

They are all in Townhead.

James H
Alex Glass

I remember doing a bit of research for someone who had ancestors who lived near there.

Great photos James

You have been very busy
wee minx

Fantastic James.. i'm going out soon to do some
HollowHorn

Jesus, James! That really brings it home as to how much of Townhead has gone & of course that is only a couple of streets you have on show there.
Excellent work.
Scary

Excellent James great work
Edward Fox

I love these photos James but I also hate them too as I hate to see yet another empty space.
Alex Glass

Strange! I would have passed that a few times on my way home from work but forgot all about there being a station room their.

Great photo James
james73

I remember the station building being open and a rather dour-faced individual
working behind the counter in the early 1980s.

Hugo Drax wrote:

The building was actually only demolished because Alexandra Park Street, to the
left, was widened as it became a slip road for the Blochairn M8 junction. Had they
not chosen to do this the building would probably be still there today.

These are a real treat James. Especially the first set where almost nothing has changed. I would love to see your present version is a similar sepia to see how close it is to the past.
Alex Glass

Fantastic James

I forgot that they moved the Parade at the Western end when they completed the motorway

Great photos

Buggered if I can see your point of reference on this one! How did you find the exact spot?

Edit.....Ooops, the pic was wider than my screen, I see it now. The church? It seems to have lost it's spire.
james73

Because the area of the car park was, until a year or two ago, the original part
of Alexandra Parade, complete with pavements and road markings. The old
bit of the road came to an abrupt halt behind the shot. They demolished
an old constuction yard and offices to the left of the shot and built flats. It
looks to me like the height of the car park area has been raised a bit too.

The church is a orange lodge now.

It's not a part of Glasgow I knew/know much of but the pics are absolutely fantastic.

Has there been such little change in the buildings or has someone, over the years, renovated them to maintain their heritage style ?  If so, hearty congratulations, because (unlike the builders of modern glass and metal monstrosities) they have retained the real spirit of Glasgow !

Regards,
Tombro

Amazing then and now images James.
I remember all these old lamp standards ... Ornate as hell i still remember my gran going effin mental when they were removing them in the name of progress...

Would have loved to have seen Armadale St before the War office deemed it useful to the war effort and remofed all the Iron Balustrads and fences.
Though the resulting low walls were playthings as a kid when i went visiting my aunt.

Brilliant stuff, you're a machine James
