Pedal power rules as bike sales soarPedal power rules as bike sales soar (Evening Times)
SOARING petrol prices have sparked a rise in pedal power.
Tesco says bicycle sales have soared by 134% in the city over the past
year.
The supermarket's buyer Ben Allen said: "The rise in bike sales this year
has been phenomenal.
"There's been an increase in sales across the range, from basic bikes to
the hi-tech models.
"Cycling is the perfect way to get through the credit crunch as, after the
initial outlay, it pays dividends in terms of savings on petrol, parking and
car running costs."
Celebrity cyclists such as Madonna, Agyness Deyn and Geri Halliwell,
along with politicians David Cameron and Boris Johnson, have helped to
promote the trend.
British Cycling chief executive Peter King said: "Cycling is on the up.
"Record numbers of cyclists are registering with our cycling programme
and the Great Britain Cycling Team is enjoying unprecedented levels of
success."

Ah, the curse of percentages. A 134% increase can easily be accounted for by a sales increase of 4 bicycles (allowing for upward fractional rounding, naturally), much like Daily Mail scare stories concerning the incidence of some obscure medical condition that has doubled in the last year. True, but negligible.
Good to see my good friend and consummate role model Geri Halliwell extending her influence into yet another sphere of society, nonetheless.
