Hi folk, the tenement building and Gym at Playfair st, Poplin st  and Swanston st,is being demolished over the next few weeks, scary is supervisor of the job and he kindly gave me tour of the gymnasium and other buildings that are coming down.

Norrie, it was a problem with how you'd filed the photos on photobucket. The folder name had space in it and not all forums will automatically translate that by adding the
Code:
%20
norrie

Hi stuball, did you sort out all those photos?
I have noticed over past few weeks that when I start new folders this %20 has appeared and it stopped me loading on to Glescapals, removing it was the answer, funny thing, when I loaded photos onto older albums in photobucket there was no %20 when copying
Heres me trying to be organised, separate folders and photobucket screws it up for me
So you recken the folder should be called poplinstplayfairstdemolition?, is that the way I should be doing it, no spaces.

Thanks for you help
Bye for now, norrie
James

Norrie.

Generally speaking, you should try and avoid spaces in filenames and folders,
particularly when it's online files. A way around it is to use the underscore _ in place
of spaces, as this wont be ignored. Also, bear in mind that if you go back and change
the filenames/folder names now it will break the links to any pictures you've uploaded
and you'll need to go back and edit them all.

H guys, I think thats me understood it at last
This was taken yesterday, the wee business I forgot to photograph on the outside, is a pile of rubble

cybers

The Gym was originally a Cash n Carry which in turn was the sight of a murder late 80's due to and armed robbery that went wrong.

Great photos Norrie.
Scary, is that a raised back court, don't think I've seen that kind of thing before, and is that a ramp on the left?
cybers

Reminds me Scary where is that fecking Cobra then ?

Minx for raised back courts there is a huge line of them at the bottom of orr st in bridgeton where they clear what was the old station.

I remember that too mate, the gym was called Wholesale Hosiery at the time I think, I found an old pic of it in the gym.

Yes, i`m guessing the raised back court was put in as there were retail premises below, also, I was told by the owner of the gym Peter Harrison that prior to the gym being a Cash `n` Carry it started life as stables for horses much like Bell St with the Horses being stabled upstairs, but I can`t find any info on it.

Cybers:: Wanna buy an old car ?
Alex Glass

Well done Norrie and Scary

Good to see this before it is demolished.

Maybe that stuff would have sold on ebay

The drum skins are of particular interest and I am sure there will be someone willing to buy these
norrie

Hi weeminx, Scary reckons that the ramp was used for horses as it was stables at one time, I am trying to find out for him.
Bye for now, norrie
LowLight

Nice pics and great find.

I may know a buyer if that stuff got saved.
Doog Doog

Good pics,Norrie.
norrie

Hi lowlight, yes the stuff got saved but I have given it to a friend who can get it back to where it belongs.
Anyway it wouldnt be right to sell them, as scary let me have them for hee haw

It's not like them to demolish old red sandstone blocks like that
norrie

The approach road to the Commenwealth games is passing through this area, so thats why this building, East End Sawmill and the Railway arches from Dalmarnock road to Baltic st had to go, check the area out, all gone
Info came from scary

Thanks for letting me know.

John

Hi Norrie, loved your Leatherwork pics I will be nightshift next week ask for Colin on dayshift if you wanna get closer with your pics and have your hi-viz etc with you
norrie

Hi scary, I dont have any of that gear but the zoom will get me close enough
Night shift, guess the power to the railway will be cut.
Bye for now, norrie
John

Yes Norrie we have what is called a `Possesion` of the Railway on nightshift and Network Rail control our hours, sometimes as little as 3 hours per night, there are hi-viz-veststs and hard hats on site for visitors on day shift so all you need are steel-toe cap boots and that goes for everyone who wants to visit, you are all welcome as long as you go through the site supervisor
Stuball

Nightshift demolition sounds very interesting
cybers

Aye it does but it came along at a time when i am nightshift elsewhere
norrie

Hi scary, Ok I have the steel toecaps
Enjoy the NS

No demolition on the nightshift just removing the scaffold crash deck over railway.

Here is what was originally at the corner. From Streapadairs collection:

Doorstop

I think we should dedicate a thread solely to those odd triangular flat-iron shaped buildings.

I'm reckoning there's a fair few about.
norrie

Poplin st Playfair st this afternoon
I think by the time I get back, say Friday, the site may well be cleared

Hi Bullet, I had forgotten about Strepadairs photo, now I know what was at the corner.

Bye for now, norrie
John

Norrie, thanks for posting the daytime pics

Bullet, thanks for that as I didn`t notice that in Streaps pics

Doorstop, I agree, those flat-iron buildings have an aura about them.
norrie

I am thinking of those flat iron tenements, if there is any left I will have taken photos of them but off the top of my head, I am not so sure there any left.
Too many photos for me to check, guess we will have to wait while I post area by area, it will take a wee while

Hi scary, thanks again for letting know about this demolition, webmaister in Glescapals is pleased that I was able to keep track of it.
Bye for now, norrie
norrie

There we have it, Poplin st Playfair st, no more
Nice to see scary has left the site tidy
This was taken this morning, 23-12-2009

John

Cheers Norrie, nice to see Dalmarnock`s new Munro in the background covered in snow

Right height for me to climb
Bye for now, norrie
chateau du lait

Hi guys, nice photos. Is this the East End Regeneration route going through there?
norrie

Hi Chateau du lait, thats what scary said, its a  new rd
Bye for now, norrie
John

Hi CDL, I hear there is a link road coming through there from the M74 to the Commonwealth Village. In that last pic there will be a big roundabout built there and the railway smoke vent will be covered over.
calamity

Heard today that Pitt st Police station is moving to the banks of the Clyde at Dalmarnock, anyone else heard this yet.
norrie

Hi Calamity, yes I read about it in the papers the other day, must have heard about you and your camera
Bye for now, norrie
calamity

aye true norrie heard workies at the Cross say, Oh heres that wee wummin again taking photis with no spool in her camera
norrie

Hi Calamity its more than once I have done that photographing cinemas all over Scotland, the film was not wound on properly, was I hacked off, you bet
Thank goodness for Digital

Bye for now, norrie
dukeboxhero

Looks like this old work in Baltic st is next to go
norrie

Hi Dukeboxhero, as far as I am led to believe the new road is heading right up to near Parkhead Stadium, could well be more than one building coming down
Have you noticed the trees have been cleared from, opposite The Hayfield pub, whats that for, could they be demolishing some of the newer factory buildings?
Bye for now, norrie
dukeboxhero

i see Clyde Gateway have aquired the Falcons nest pub, think ill get a couple photos before that also comes under the hammer.
norrie

Hi Dukeboxhero, they have had that pub since last year, I noticed it when I took the photos og Playfair st/ Poplin st demolition
Surely they wont demolish the pub?
Bye for now, norrie
John

The former bank building The Falcons Nest is a listed building and as far as I know there are no plans to demolish it.
cybers

Rumours abound it is to be tarted and refitted as an up market eaterie but on the other side of the coin it was also earmarked as a ticket outlet.
John

Yip, heard both those options mentioned Cybers, but as you say its all rumours.
cybers

Yer it was a slug driver that mentioned it to me..
No offence Dukebox...

The other option i heard was upmarket bar/diner John, Though quite where that will fit in after the games i dont know.
dukeboxhero

No offence taken cybers   You have to be a bit thick skinned to drive these slugs,
calamity

Anyone know whats happening with the Falcons Nest, I see Clydegateway taken it over.
