Posting photos to the forum - how to do it

That's me just joined so that I can post some shots.  Have looked on the FAQ, looked for stickies and the likes to find out HOW to post photos.  Well, I can't find anything about it.  Maybe it's there and I'm just Dan Flynn....

So, HOW do you post photos to the forum ?  Is it just a case of plamping them on or should you use a photo hosting site like photobucket or something and just post links ?  Also, what are the rules concerning photo dimensions and file sizes ?

Cheers

Widmeister

widmeister.

You need to host your images somewhere, so use Photobucket, Flickr, Tinypic or whatever
and post the pics on here via the image tags - e.g. All three of the above are free and allow
you to create a personal account.

[ img ]http://www.photbucket.com/your_account/your_picture.jpg [ /img]

Maximum size shold be 1024px wide, but can be more for panoramic shots.

You can choose the photo size from the all sizes tab above your photo and pick the one that fits nicely on the screen medium or large should be fine.

Copy the photo's URL from below it and then follow these instructions on how to post it:-

make sure you leave a blank line between the code to show the pics - this then leaves a blank line between the pics

As Alan said, hit enter after you've entered one pictures url and/or text.

How do you upload photos to the Gallery?
James

As far as I know, all pictures shown in posts on the forum are added to the gallery,
though it doesn't update immediately.

James H
wee minx

I just did a post in funny pics, and did an attachment, which uploads straight from my pc , that worked and the pic posted, but it is not in the gallery.
None of my flickr pics I post on here are in the gallery.
James

Maybe it doesn't like Flickr. I honestly dont know and it isnt something I even
look at to be honest - it's there as part of the forum layout. I'll look into and
see what I can find...

James H
Stuball

It doesnt link flickr picture because of the terms and conditions of flickr. When posting a photo, it should always link back to flickr

Whit gallery?
wee minx

The gallery link that you click right at the bottom of the board, which I could see till i mentioned it.  Now I get this

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Host '87.117.199.165' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server in /home/forumclient/public_html/freeforums/myffcms/com_gallery.php on line 402.  Unfortunately I cannot get into the php code for the gallery page to line 402 to see whats wrong
That warning is actually in line 303 in the source page, if that helps any.
HollowHorn

Cheers for that, I got in, must be Santa.

Uploading

Help please!!
For past week cannot upload pics from my computer, previously I could.
Now receiving the following error message:

Error: failed to copy: http://urbanglasgow.myfastforum.o...p/to../../../gallery/760200.jpg.z

Do not think it's a speed or internet fault as I can upload to my Flickr without any problems.
Any assistance in this would be greatly received

I'm also having intermittent problems logging on .. timing out being the usual result.

Edit: Scratch that.. just seen the banner.

Hi all

What is up with Flicker? i think it had a nice easy to navigate layout, now I have to search for everything.

Can someone please explain to this idiot how to post photo's from Flicker to UG?

I have gotten as far as all sizes but i cant get the any link to show the photo here.

Jock58
Stuball

Right click the image and select copy image URL or whatever your browser says.
They are trying to prevent people hotlinking photographs without them linking back to flickr as per the terms and conditions
Jock58

Thanks Stu

I had to r/click - properties & copy the link from there. but that seems to work

Someone should do a stick tutorial

Install Google Chrome>Install fittr flickr>Click on your image>Click on 'o' (original size) or whatever size you're after>link in address bar.

Think I'll be cancelling the Pro account soon. Try out Smug Mug or anything that isn't Flickr.

Chrome http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/landing_chrome.html?hl=en

Fittr Flickr https://chrome.google.com/extensi.../fhaledancjhefginmkkondfjpnkhdglh

My Pro account with flickr runs out next week and I won`t be renewing it as its not the same place I joined a few years ago,. I don`t fancy Smug Mug either Pete, if you find something better give me a shout.
LowLight

I'm thinking Smug Mug or Zenfolio http://www.zenfolio.com/ . Tried both before but stuck with Flickr.

Time for a change.
LowLight

Link to a wee test gallery. Really liking SmugMug so far. First time I've used it in a couple of years.

I think they are all much of the sameness whilst trying to offer the same thing in a very competative market I still think flickr tops the board both in value and pricing...
The new layout i was critical of at first but after driving it for a few weeks now i kinda like it .
Smugmug has a great layout but is pricey for pro accounts Fotki is another one i use but it takes a bit of getting used to.
Snapfish i liked but their community rules sucked extreme ass..
Photobucket whilst is an able one its a little tempramental ... I still use that one as a freebie for stuff i try to distance myself from

For some reason Flickr is for me.
Stuball

Do you realise what happens to all your pictures if you delete your account? Are you willing to go through all your posts on UG and fix every single link? You've already seen how much damage it can do and hopefully appreciate how much work myself and the other moderators have done to try keep broken links to a minimum. We still find broken links in recently revived threads and will quickly remove broken links and keep everything in context.
I understand why some of you may think flickr isn't as good as it was and I partly agree... too many people using it now, too much crap getting posted, not enough views from your own friends and contacts and the list goes on. But it is one of the best and possibly one of the most reliable image hosting sites on the internet offering many more features than you really need.
Some may not like the new layout but I'm hoping thats down to the human nature of fearing change... I was a bit stumped for the first couple of times I looked at it but when I got the hang of it, I loved it... it's a lot tidier with easier access to some of the recently mentioned features.

I'm not trying to be selfish and trying to prevent work for myself... I'd hope all you regulars want to keep the forum as good as it has gotten over the last 2 years

Cheers

The joys of being a mod eh?

I'm looking at it more as saving $25. Might not even bother signing up with any other hosting company.
John

Stu, I didn`t say I was deleting my Flickr account, merely not renewing my pro account, correct me if i`m wrong, but I don`t think that will affect any links. I`m not keen on the new layout either, but have been scunnered with Flickr for some time now and hardly upload there these days. I appreciate that Flickr will suit some and not others as Pete has expressed so its not just me thats unhappy with it.

Pete, yes there`s also the saving of $25, i`m thinking more and more of just using a personal blog type thing.
LowLight

That's what I was just thinking about John. Don't really think I'm getting my money's worth any more. That isn't totally down to Flickr either.

If you cancel your Pro account only the first 200 pics will still show on forums etc. That's if nothing has changed in the last wee while.
John

Pete, my understanding of it is the first 200 pics will show in flickr, but all the pics are still there just not showing and if I decide to reactivate my pro account at a later date the pics will all reappear in Flickr so I can`t see how the links get broken, but i`m happy to be corrected on this.
LowLight

ahhh I thought anything over the 200 hundred limit would show this in forums etc.

LowLight

Sounds good.

Quote:
Your photos are not removed from Flickr, only from the list of your photos. If you blogged a photo and it no longer appears in your list, it will still appear on your blog, and the photo's Flickr page will still work just fine.
John

Thanks for clarifying that Pete, that makes it a win-win situation, I can happily close my pro account without upsetting anyone in here and also move on to do my own thing elsewhere
LowLight

It is indeed win-win.

I'm on the hunt now.

Uploading photos

Hello! Please, could someone tell me, an idiot Luddite, how to upload photos to the site? Thank you!
cybers

Right you have the image storage sorted all you need now is to locate the code for the image.
Choose all sizes 1024 seems popular and the max size for the site then if using firefox browser right click on the image and select copy image location
If using Internet explorer right click select properties and you then need to select the Img Url...

Paste that to the web page like so
[url]IMAGE URL GOES HERE[/url]

Preview post and if all looks right hit submit...

Regards

Cybers
vicshere

Thanks Cybers, I'll try that.
LowLight

Vic, maybe for the sake of simplicity you could try hosting your pics at Tinypic.

www.tinypic.com

This will generate the [IMG] code for you then it's a simple copy/paste.

In the red highlighted area.

vicshere

Oh, so now I'm simple! (Only joking. Thank you.)
The paste-the-name-then-click-img route worked for my small brain, eventually, but ta!
LowLight

Switched to Picasa. https://picasaweb.google.com/home

1GB free storage. Images under 800px on the longest side don't count towards your limit.

I'm turning into a Google whore.

Thankfully I gave this a try again before giving Flickr more money.
discominer

Can't easily see how to share pics from Picasa on here...
LowLight

Right click on image>copy image URL
discominer

Thank you!

What happened ??

I've tried to upload an image from my computer but all that is displayed is the message: -

"Image has expired from the MYFF gallery"

What's the problem ??

Andy
Doorstop

Have you tried uploading the same image to a more mainstream archive such as Flickr or Photobucket or the like?

Sounds like the link has died.
asparkes

It's strange because I've uploaded a few photos without a problem but this one is a no no.
Hmmmm
asparkes

Just tried to upload the same photo from the unedited copy and it works!!
It seems that your gallery doesn't like Photoshop much.

Andy
cybers

erm what gallery as i thought uploading to the site itself was a no no
asparkes

Obviously confusion reins here (on my part).
I just uploaded from my hard drive .... is that not the thing to do?? (oops!)
cybers

Nope we generally use photo hosting accounts like flickr or photobucket others are available and post links from those accounts most offer free accounts and are pretty straight forward to use. It helps keep the costs down for running the forum and reduces the forums footprint in bandwidth from the server.

How do you do the spoiler thingy ?

I want to post a pic but it might not be suitable for just posting on the board.
Stuball

Code:
[spoiler]content or image[/spoiler]
Gareth1974

How do you resize?

I tried to do it on photobucket but the pic didn't change?

Seems a moderator done it for me on 'Creepy and Spooky'
James

You're best doing it in a photo editor of some sort, Photoshop, Paint Shop
Pro, Gimp, etc. If you have a Flickr account, it will provide different sizes
of the same image that you upload.

anytime today i been trying to upload pics to the site i go to photobucket and clic the link then i upload the pic it gives a splashurl or something like that
fastnet

Make sure the link has the [img] your pic[img] inserted before you post Ken.

Don't use photobucket so I can't see what you are clicking.
ken198960

i have posted pics before but screwd up for now
cybers

You need to copy the "Direct Link" then put it between the [ IMG ] tags
