Problems

Guys .. it appears I can't post pictures.

All attempts produce a black banner with the bbcode in red with the text underneath stating "Sorry you cannot use the bbcode reserved for moderation" or words to that effect.

That's the location of a screenshot incidentally as I can't post the pic.

Whassappeneeeng???
James

Are you sure you were using the 'img' tags and not the 'mod' tags? I've just edited
your post and it worked ok. Can you try it again on this thread?

James H
Doorstop

Just tried with the same result James.

Definitely using the img tags incidentally.
James

Can you please log out, delete all cookies for UG and log back in? There have
been a few wee issues since the server move. If you dont know how to delete
the cookies for this site, try logging into the site via this address:

http://urbanglasgow.myfastforum.org/

James H
Doorstop

Trying all of the above is just giving me the same result James.
Doorstop

Just tried posting the pics singly and they now seem to be going up ok .. must have been a glitch with that particular post James.

Sorry.
James

Can you upload a version of the pic with the error code that isn't reduced in size
so I can read it and post the info on the support forum? I'm asking for their take
on it right now. When was the last time you uploaded a pic without problems?

James H
Doorstop

It's this code that's giving the problems James

{img]http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/Doorstop_2008/modelt.jpg[/img}

... with the curly brackets being square ones when posting obviously

Link to the error page image full size is:

http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/Doorstop_2008/Image1-50.jpg

I was uploading pics only a couple of days prior to this happening.
James

Right - from that pic you are still using the wonko URL.
i.e. http://urbanglasgow.wonko.myfastforum.org/

Can you update it to use http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/ instead and see if you still
get the problem?

The wonko URL was a temp address to cope with a recent server move.

Test post:

Seems fine now James .. thanks for pulling me out of that particular mire.
womble

Recently when accessing UG iv'e been getting either a blankpage (just the background) or a critical error notice (CE notice disappears when I use back page) I dont know if it is the site, my server (SKY) or my comp getting ready to pop its clogs.

If in wrong topic I apologize in advance.
Stuball

Hmm... nobody else has reported problems I don't think... When it does it, just hit refresh or F5 and if it persists, let us know
James

First port of call: clear out your cookies etc for this site and try again.

James H

My problem is I'm the problem. I'm not used to forums and been lookin for a help page or a "how to "
How do you bring up a previous poster's post when you want to reply... so that you can refer to it.
eg..thingmybob said

Thanks

Thanks James...sorted

Anyone else getting this a lot today?

Stuball

Yup.... MFF seem to be trying to block ad blockers.

James will say to try the modified hosts file but I can't use it on my main computer.

It's sh!te... who are they to say what gets displayed on my screen? yes, I know they need to pay for the service but whats it to them if I block ads?

I use Firefox and haven't had this issue at all, and that's in Windows 2000,
Windows XP and Windows 7.

It is happening James intermittent though ...

Just dumped all cookies and LSO's and cleared Cache so will keep you posted.
cybers

Nope still the same...

Windows 7 64bit Firefox browser
cybers

Host Script causing the error .... Advertising for free forums is on fast push javascript

Ha! Bookmarks mate, all of which are pretty much redundant these days.
AlanM

Had no problems with FF on Vista or Win 7 using the Ad Blocker Plus plugin
owlnation

Same problem here

Firefox on OSX. I do have adblock plus running.

However, I've never specifically blocked anything on this site, but I do block invasive, dodgy adservers at root.

While I do understand webmasters desire to get revenue from advertising, they need to get that advertising from reputable sources. I have no qualms blocking invasive ads that may well compromise the security of my computer, or my privacy. Or, indeed, those ads that flash and bounce around and distract from my ability to read the content of the page. I'm not a 12 year old with the attention span of a goldfish, I simply cannot read forums where there's other stuff flashing on the screen.

This site is currently a real pain to use. The webmasters either need to fix the problem, or get more reputable sources of advertising that people won't block. (and static advertising too, not flash nor gif animations).

Otherwise there's really no point in trying to view threads here when they randomly fail to display. I like this site, but I can't be bothered with the hassle of reloading pages until they finally display.
womble

The only ads I get are at the top & bottom of the page.

OH and am using vista nd IE7
me

im using chrome and every now n then i get this

Code:
Unable to display page

Sorry but we could not display this forum page on this occasion.

Please ensure that your browser supports javascript and is not running anything that will interfere with the intended display of the page, such as advert blocking software.

This service relies on using advertising to keep it running.

usually get the page to load after a few attempts tho.

is ths the host tryin to get me to disable my adblock?
Stuball

I'm afraid all the changes to the advertising system is out with the forum owners control
cybers

Strong arm tactics are not the answer though and were i thought deemed illegal in the uk

Some of the advertising links are shall we say dubious at best ....
If i wanted a massage parlour i have google for that.
The current form of advertising seems to latch onto certain keywords from your last posts and display the worst taste in discretion.
If my kid used this site and was under 16 i would be pretty pissed by some of the returns.
me

other BB boards dont have this problem tho.

i dunno if whoever runs this site pays for it or not but im a member of other BB sites that do pay and nothing like this happens so maybe thats it
Stuball

Thats all very well, but we are a non-profit organisation.... is anyone willing to contribute towards the forum?
cybers

Yes....
Is the long and short answer to that....

as long as it was not run like a business like some of the other miscreantic drivel of other forums..
Quote:
Send me 10 quid for admin costs and i shall post yir picture shyte.

Easier than drug dealing i suppose when you have the captive audience of a golden generation.

the other boards im on are not run as companies.....members donate if n when the can or it is needed and the account is open to view for everyone to show how much is needed or in the bank......they usually only have to ask about twice times a year(if that) as most regular members stick in a tenner or fiver to the kitty a year which keeps it afloat...with all the money going to pay the server/host or whatever

its under £100 a year so even if people stuck in £2 it would still pay for it
James

Read this. http://forum.myfreeforum.org/viewportal.php?component=shop

For £37.27 you can have 12 months advert-free.

If it really bothers user so much then please indicate a) if you are willing to
contribute anything and b) how much you are willing to pay.

If we have enough we can go ahead with it. But bear in mind, this will need
to be paid again next year.

James H
cybers

Ahll pay it fecking all if need be
me

there you go.....£37...if every 1000+ poster stuck in £3 a year it would be paid

plus other members would stick in a few quid too so it would be paid for for at least a couple of years

one of the forums i use (they pay £60) uses a thing that you can buy a pixel(or 4) on a page for 50p each(and stick your pic on it) to save someone collecting £2s from everyone, it then sends the collected money to whoever is responsible for paying it..plus it makes it obvious how much is in the coffers

i could find out the page details if u want
Doorstop

I'm up for donating whatever it takes .. it's washers, let's face it.
cybers

Well I have no problem with it after all the enjoyment I get from the board like mr stop there said it's washers and the only work arounds I have found so far are I.E8 or safari so to pay to use firefox again is nothing...
norrie

Count me in, as you say its washers
fastnet

I don't mind throwing in a few washers as well......

This is a cracking wee site and I don't mind contributing.
Beano

Aye...count me in, ah wull throw in some buns tae.

I've no idea what this is all about, probably becaue none of it has happened to me. If washers is what it takes though, count mine in.

Hi all

Personally speaking I'm not bothered by the ads as they can be avoided relatively easily and they seem to appear intermittently, whether because Admin has it under control or some browsers are better at blocking than others, however I appreciate that this is not the same for others.

My concern with this phenomenon is the affect it may have on this board.  Since joining late last year I have been astounded at the collective local knowledge and investigative abilities of those here.  The effort some make and in just trudging round the streets of Glasgow (and afar) to take photographs to share with the rest of us is commendable not forgetting the lengths othres go to get that elusive shot, I for one would hate to see that jeopardised and my experience elsewhere suggests that when a board is not intuitive or has a clumsy feel about it, people stop using it.

If members feel these ads are a problem then removing them would be the solution and donations would work.  Since all you guys must be multi millionaires given the royalties you'll have earned on your photos reaching the whopping £37 annual cost would be easy plus I'm happy to chip in as I plan to be here for a long time to come.

Alex Glass

I have grown to ignore the adds so they don't bother me at all. But this subject comes up on a regular basis and as has already been said it is not a lot of money to keep the site ad free so count me in. I don't mind making a regular contribution in a yearly basis if that is what is agreed.

I would be happy to pay £10 how do I pay?
streapadair

Happy to chip in too.
James

I can accept PayPal. Say £2 each - that only requires 18 people to pay.

A running total of whats been raised can be posted in this thread.

How's that sound?

James H
cybers

Forward me the details via pm or public posting and if we dont make a total i will make up the shortfall so no admin is out of pocket James
Doorstop

I'll split any shortfall with cybers actually .. just let me know how to go about paying my whack in the meantime.
streapadair

Me too, James.
norrie

Hi james, put me down, not sure how to use paypal right enough

rotten milk

i'm quite prepared to chip in a (wee) bit, but howzabout what a few other forums do? a wee quiz/raffle type thingy for the general membership? doesnae have to be an expensive prize (esp. if there's someone who could 'sponsor' a prize) and there's plenty regular contributors who would be †up for it, surely?

those who enjoy the forum are prepared to contribute, mebbes not by much individually, but that way, it's not all down to the mods is it?
and any extra can be held back, just in case?

I'm willing to chip in too,but have no paypal a/c.
