Sunderland

Some photos from my wanderings earlier this week.

Hylton Castle. There's been a building on this site since shortly after 1066. The current stone building dates from late 14th or early 15th century. Has one of the oldest representations of the stars and stripes on one of the shields, representing the local Washington family.

Back view of the castle.

St Catherine's Chapel, within the castle grounds.

The font in the chapel. Any male who was brought up around the castle who tells you they never had a piss in the font is a liar!

St Peter's Church. Dates from 674. Venerable Bede entered this (when it was a Monastery) aged 7. The tower is thought to be from the original building and can be dated accurately at least 719.

Roker beach.

I never did find out the extent of fun one could have for 2p. I'd rather have intrigue than crushing disappointment.

Sadly not the football ground.

Wearmouth Bridge, with the railway bridge on the right.

View from the bridge looking down river towards the North Sea.

Will post more if I can stay sober enough to go wandering.
