Superbikes in the Square - 6th August 2008Superbikes in the Square - 6th August 2008LOCATION: GEORGE SQUARE, GLASGOW. BIKES IN THE SQUARE - 6 AUGUST 2008 - ROAD CLOSURES In order to provide facilities for a motorbike event, a safety zone will be created in the city centre. Centred on George Square, the safety zone will be closed to vehicles from various times, starting at 11:00hrs and finishing at 23:00hrs on Wednesday 6 August - see attached drawings for details. All of these roads will be subject to a ban on waiting and loading throughout the day. Essential access will be maintained to premises by arrangement with stewards. DESCRIPTION: Delays are to be expected in the city centre and drivers are advised to consider alternatives such as public transport. You have been warned. |

Bikers will rev it up in city centre (Evening Times)
AROUND 20 of the world's fastest bikers will transform Glasgow city centre into a high-octane motorsports arena. They are taking part in Superbikes in the Square, which is expected to attract around 20,000 spectators. Tomorrow's event will see George Square converted into a mini track as teams from the British Superbike Championships thrill the crowds with demonstration laps from 5.30-8pm. The championship event will see riders race their 1000cc machines at speeds of up to 180mph. It will kick off with Texan Eric Scot, better known as "go fast jet-pack man". Scottish ace Niall Mackenzie, the three-time British superbike champion, will also appear. The race car of Scottish star David Leslie, who was killed in an aircraft crash in Kent this year, will also be on show. Superbikes in the Square heralds the build-up to Scotland's top motor- racing weekend of 2008, including the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship, which is on August 16 and 17 at Knockhill, Fife. A number of roads around George Square will be closed for parts of tomorrow, including Cochrane Street, Montrose Street and South Frederick St. Diversions will be signposted. James H |

Superbike stars burn up George Square (Evening Times)
THOUSANDS of motorsport enthusiasts braved the wet weather to watch top racers perform ahead of two major competitions. Glasgow's George Square was transformed into a racetrack as some of the world's fastest motorcycle and saloon touring car racers showed off their skills. The crowds were also treated to a spectacle by jet pack performer Eric Scott, from Texas, who flew over city centre buildings. Heavy rain and winds failed to dampen the spirits of revellers last night, who turned up at the square to watch stars from the British Superbike Championships. The event, hosted by Knockhill Racing Circuit and Glasgow City Council, was in the city for a second year after last year's huge success. The spectacular display, which featured around 20 riders, took place on a specially set-up track. While rain throughout the day threatened to turn things sour, the crowd could not have been in better spirits as they watched daredevil stunts and listened to live music by traditional Scottish band Cannadrumma. The show included superbikes, rally cars and touring cars, keeping the crowds entertained until 8pm. James H |

Decided to go along as it was a good chance to test the high speed shooting on the camera with fast moving objects. Glad to say it does work most of the time although there was a good few blurred shots I couldnt use. Done from the safety of Georgics the pub, with its large glass conservatory

I know Exactly what you mean... I have been to a few Supermoto events and even the ultrasonic lens struggled to cope sometimes. Kudos indeed to the guys that make a good living from sports photography. |
