The Great Eastern Hotel

I heard that last nights storms brought part of the roof in of the Great Eastern Hotel on Duke St. I bet that secret development council are jumping for joy at their excuse to demolish it.
Luxury apartments anyone?
zolita1908

oh definately, i'm surprised something hasn't happened to it before

Sadly, it seems as if part of the roof was blown off.

Office or flats as long as the integrity of the facade was retained would anyone really bother ?
It's days as a hotel are over and it would hardly attract 5* clientelle regardless of its location.

For Sale: Jakie Heights - 2 bed Luxury flat £300k
Fully restored throughout in a central location
Good local transport links stunning vistas of the Necropolis over the Brewery
Fully fitted Kitchen but cannot get rid of the wang of Pish !!!

Love the pic all the same especially the depth, It almost looks like Bobby Plod there is homing in with the famous words...

Wee bit more in the Evening Times today...

"A car lies damaged by falling debris after roof tiles were blown off Glasgow’s Great
Eastern Hotel in Duke Street."

"The council's building control team was called to a number of incidents throughout
the city including the Great Eastern Hotel where parts of the roof had blown off,
which caused the closure of Duke Street. The area was cordoned off today until
it could be assessed."

Shouldnt have parked at a bus stop
zolita1908

maybe he thought it was a bus

Aye first are getting strict on that now.

So the wind helps the numpties at city chambers get rid of another unwanted eyesore.

First can't get strict on anything... they arent the police and despite attempts at world domination, have no power. All they can do is alert the relevant authorities
glasgowken

I've waited at that bus stop, but not recently
Scary

The company I work for are doing the clean up, the latest i`ve heard is that the remaining roof section will be removed and the building will be converted into flats.
How did it happen ? One theory is that there was a mound of `Type1` stone or soil behind the building that forced the wind upwards and lifted the roof from under the eaves.
Smartalex

The type 1 stone would probably be the Huge pile of Bricks from the High Street Goods Yard that were placed behind the building. eejits

£10m revamp plan won’t be hit by storms

HOUSING bosses have insisted storm damage won't delay a £10million
refurbishment of an historic Glasgow building.

The B-listed Great Eastern in Duke Street has lain empty since August 2001
when it closed after almost 100 years as a homeless hostel.

Plans to convert the former Heartbreak Hotel - as it was also known - into 60
luxury flats and site 48 rented flats on land behind the building were approved
in June 2006.

But last week 90mph winds which ravaged the west of Scotland tore off part
of the Great Eastern's roof.

Today, however, Milnbank Housing Assocation, which owns the building and is
behind the development plans, insisted it was still on course to start the main
conversion work by late March.

Cranes will be brought in over the next few days to remove the entire roof after
sections of it were blown off during last week's storms.

And for safety reasons a stretch of Duke Street between High Street and Bellgrove
will remain closed until the operation is complete.
