Don’t know if anyone else was there but I went along with a pal to David Page’s talk. As always he is worth hearing and always brings up interesting angles and observations. This time though, maybe I just didn’t cotton on, but I think he maybe got a bit too cerebral.
The theme of what he was saying initially sounded really thought-provoking. He was suggesting that cities (although it was Glasgow he was really speaking about) in their historical development could be classified as horizontal, then vertical (and bigger sideways) and then there are the in-betweens bits that we now need to aim to conserve and develop. He argued that Scottish architects and developers need to stop just copying whatever they see new overseas. Instead they should be looking more inwards to Scottish design and Scottish solutions.
In part of his response to my question, he strongly commended the Scottish Executive’s/Government’s new guidelines on street design… I must admit that I didn’t even know they existed.
There's always a nice wee bit of socialising after these talks, but the age profile of the most of the audience... I felt positively a youngster!
