Tree feller (not) wanted ?

Not sure where to put this but what the heck . . .

Mrs Namestain works at a well known power supplier in the Cathcart area and mentioned that a lot of tree-felling is going on along Spean Street in connection with some flood prevention works on the White Cart.

Dropped by armed with the phone-camera and took a few snaps.

I'm no arboreal-expert but these trees are much taller than the tenements opposite them and must have been there for a long, long time.

all the trees along the bank are apparently coming down in addition to those already felled - big change in this neck of the woods.

at the end a wee query for any experts on the victoria infirmary.

Does anyone have a photo taken when the 2 nearest wings still looked like the one at the battlefield rest end i.e. with the curved balconies ?

Can't help you with 'the vicky' pic,but I can tell you this;
Whoever had the idea to cut down those trees needs a good kick in the nads as they have now taken away the only thing that was holding the river bank together.

turns out the "tree-fellers" have a website . . .

http://www.whitecartwaterproject.org/index.htm

NOTE : includes quite a lot of good recent close-up aerial shots of the southside so may be of interest more generally.

They have been taken away for safety reasons as well as the flood project.
As the bank erosion continues there was a good possibility these trees could and would fall over..
Flood prevention will only work if it is not compounded by trees bigger than tenements are not falling in the living room window.

Supposedly for every one removed two are getting planted though wether thats in timbuktoo its a bit hard to ascertain.

But doesnt removing trees on a river bank make it weaker?

Good thing the whole bank is being rebuilt with a concrete wall then!

I agree with doog doog and Stu here, the trees are the mainstay of the bank, ok..they will build concrete banks, but trees were a natural defence no matter the height

Unless there was soil erosion as in this case then the footing of the trees is in jeopardy. Every time the water level raised a little more bank disappeared. Any time trees need to be removed it courts controversy regardless of the safety issues involved.

just answered my own question about the Vicky by taking a quick look at Virtual Mitchell.

looks like an easy past/present next time i'm in the neighbourhood - if I can persuade someone in the second floor flat above the coperative to let me take a snap from their livingroom window . . .

in the meantime here's a quick Gearth image to be going on with and by the looks of it some trees got cut down here too - maybe another flood  prevention scheme
