World War Z

Run ... the zombies are coming! (© Evening Times)

Mayhem came to the streets of Glasgow city centre today as hundreds of screaming
office workers were filmed ‘running for their lives’.

The chaos hit Cochrane Street, off George Square, as Brad Pitt’s movie shoot
for World War Z saw hundreds of panic-stricken people flee rows of cars and
buildings to escape zombies. Sirens and screams were heard as American-style
police officers ran down the street to warn the terrified public, then panic ensued
as crowds of people sprinted for their lives.

The action drew hundreds of puzzled onlookers as the £80million film, which has
gripped Glasgow’s interest, unfolded in front of them. The city centre area has
been transformed to look like Philadelphia for the film. Among the crowd were
tourists, some of whom have travelled across the world to witness the excitement.

Roland Jensen, 37, came to see Glasgow transformed into a zombie war zone.
He said: “I’m a big fan of films and I really wanted to come and see World War Z
unfold. I have family in Glasgow and have been here before so that attracted me
even more. It’s really exciting to have such a high-profile film come to the city.”

Anjali Gupta, from Glasgow who looked on in awe with her family said: “It’s so
cool that they have transformed the area to look just like America. I can’t wait to
see more of the action. Nothing like this has happened in Glasgow before.”

Hollywood megastar Pitt spent his first day on set yesterday attracting hundreds of
spectators to the production locations near the City Chambers. The top spot for
fans was in John Street where Brad’s trailer was parked.

Pitt plays UN worker Gerry Lane who is travelling around the world collecting stories
about the zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening
to destroy humanity.

A spectacular car chase and two crashes featuring the star were also being laid
out. Brad took time out to wave to screaming fans yesterday – when filming was
delayed by rain – as he began two weeks of filming here. The schedule reveals how
47-year-old Pitt will cheat death in the city streets during a heart-stopping car chase.
As filming stopped for a break Pitt headed for his trailer and delighted fans by
giving them a smile and wave.

Shouldn't there be a thread for filmmaking in Glasgow?

I liked discovering about Harvey Keitel's film 'Deathwatch' made in the 1970's.  Apparently there were 5 films made in Glasgow before 1930 - anyone know what they were?

One of my earliest memories was of a film being made in Jessie St in Polmadie.  The listed Sentinel building was dressed to look like a building in either post-WW2 Berlin or Moscow.  I think it was called 'An Englishman Abroad', it was about Anthony Burgess and it was a BBC production.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Englishman_Abroad

Apparently it is of a pre-stressed concrete construction type that was pioneered in Germany at the time.

What was the name of the one made by Charlie Sheen that never got released?  Apparently when he came here he picked-up a prostitute and gave her a few grand to get some ... well some 'Charley' and guess what? .... yep he never saw her again.

It was probably one of those in the front door and out the back through the drying-greens jobs:

'haud oan a wee minute 'er pal ... Ah'll jist nip up this close and get yer stuff'

I wonder how long it lasted her?  Probably a week.

Show your loved ones that you're thinking of them!

If you are making a film then you can't go wrong with the these three subjects: zombies, nazis or dinosaurs.

Would be a work of creative genius of an unseen magnitude if you could write a film that comprised all three genres.

Think the production crew might have missed a trick with their zombie film .... lol might get a world record for the winner as well with zombies chasing the leaders

I guess that's 'fast-food' by definition?

I went there today to see the filming near George St.  Switch on the TV and it's guys in vehicles with guns all over the news and now it's at the bottom of my road.

Art imitating life imitating art!

You can actually see that most of the civillian cars are actually UK right-hand drive.  The yellow cabs, hummers, etc aren't.

I wonder if that fact, and maybe fact that traffic in the distance is driving on the left, will be highlighted in some movie mistake program in the future?

I love the swat guys sitting on the bench with the shooters ... And armed robbery took a dramatic fall in glasgow city centre local news reports

The guy with the book just looks totally bemused by it all

Chatting to one of the security staff yesterday, she said they actually had to postpone filming some stunts earlier in the week because it was too sunny!

I suppose if yi want the most days filming in Scotland in the shortest time rain is probably the safest option in 85% of the time

It's harder to fake sunshine

Nice shots all

Rumour has it that Halle Berry will be filming in Glasgow in two weeks time. She is doing the Tom Hanks movie, Cloud Nine. Most of it will be shot in Germany but heard that she will be doing some scenes at the Necropolis. All good for Glasgow!

Shooting of the film had to be extended by a day earlier in the week due to the good weather. If you look closely you can see that they have from time to time had to wet the street and cars where they are filming. So it is true. They hadn't previously intended to film last Tuesday so that was the additional day. They are due to finish by the 31st August.

Latest estimates are that it has generated £4m for the wider Glasgow economy. There have been three to four times the number of people coming to the citiy centre to view filming from behind the barriors at key points around the Square.

Halie Berry is coming to Glasgow to film soon but I am not sure which film it is. We are also getting scenes for the new Batman movie. Maybe it is that :)

I think another factor is that these scenes have a lot of car crashes in them and the stuntdrivers need the road to be slippery.

ah Zombies are the enemy of choice for the Politically Correct (PC) generation of today: apolitical, non-ethnically descript and belonging to no particular creed, culture or religion!
caledonia84

Sorry to bump a year old thread

but just so this on a google image search and realised it came from here, that's me on the 50 cal!

Heard rumours that the scenes they shot in Glasgow are either to be re done or scrapped :( hopefully the former!

great shots by the way!

Thought the whole thing had been canned and shelved indefinitely for undisclosed reasons.

Probably cos The Barra's would not come to an amicable agreement over distribution rights.

Looks awesome.....
Finally a Zombie movie where they can bloody move quickly
caledonia84

It does look good

Looks like they used most of the Glasgow scenes during the trailer.

I was speaking to our director on set and he was telling me that the zombies in this were modeled on LIONS!!!!!

Once I stopped laughing and he explained it a bit more it made a little more sense he says they will be moving really fast and will instinctively lunge at people hands and teeth first, like a lioness would take something down.

They also look like flowing water in mass numbers, almost mimics a natural disaster like a tsunami or something, looks quite impressive, they had to change the book for this. The change in the book from human to zombie  took a day or 2. In this they made it about 3 seconds to give that tidal wave effect of rapid infection

It's his stunt double.

I recall reading back in July on Yahoo that his stand-in, not his stunt man, was a trainee lawyer.   He fololwed him around the inside of some supermarket in Cardonald, shadowing him so as to be able to mimic his walking movements and do his part for the long shots.  No speaking to the Great Man himself, of course.  And all for £4 an hour!

Alycidon

Watched the Cloud Atlas at teh weekend, the San Francisco Glasgow shots were very obviously Glasgow, you coukd clearly make out the Livingston Tower of Strathclyde University behind Halle Berry's car
