I worked for Sir William Gray for most of the 90's. I recall having to deliver something to the Council's legal offices in the Chambers. I got thoroughly lost in the building but ended up passing by his portrait.

Apart from his dodgy haircut in the portrait, I was struck by how similar he still looked - even down to his bloody tie!

Vinny do you know the true story behind the portrait? I often tell the story that he paid for the commission himself as the Council at the time refused to pay for a painting as they wanted to save money by using a photograph. That is the reason why he doesn't have the Lord Provost's chain. They refused permission feeling that they were going to get saddled with the costs for the commission.

Don't know how much if any of that is true.

You must have lots of stories which can be shared without breaking a confidance. Would love to here what he was like. I often feel that he was one of the better Lord Provosts of that period.

I didn't know that about the portrait! I know that he told the Corpy in no uncertain terms that they were not installing the lamps in front of his hoose!

He told me the story of the time he was fulfilling his civic duty at a football match at Ibrox. As he gets out the car, he overhears someone sayingto his mate in the queue 'There Wullie Gray, told you he was a Prod.' 'Naw, he's wae the Corpy, he must be a Tim' At which point Bill's assistant leans over to them and says 'Yer both wrang, look at his nose, he's a f'kin Jew!

As for the man himself, I thought he was fantastic to work for and I would not be doing what I am today if it wasn't for him, his encouragement and support.

First time I have seen a post moderated in such a way.

Need to get into the Chambers to get a photo of Sir William Gray. Also need to do a little research on his time as Lord Provost.

Thanks Vinny for sharing such a great story. Typical Glasgow story don't you think
