Hi, thanks for the tip, didn't know they did tours.
My dad was a portrait painter and the council
enquired about him painting William Gray in 1972.

As far as I knew it did not go ahead and I thought
Benno Schotz made a bust of him instead. However
he must have painted on of them as he did create this
painted sketch. Perhaps it was done as a sample.
Hoping to identify the sitter.

Fleeting glimpse of Bill Gray in this one from 1973.  I think the fire was on 7 May 1973.

Can't believe I missed this post.  

I think this could have been one of the painings that was originally a photograph. There was an attempt to have them all converted to paintings but the publicity of spending money on this would have been bad at a time when budgets were being cut.

It face looks familiar but can put a name to it yet.

Just wanted to belatedly update the answer to this query - The portrait is of Provost Tom Barbour. He was provost of Paisley, hence the difficulty locating subject. You can read about him in the local newspapers.
